How we chose: We compared night modes, quoted noise levels, humidistats, extraction at UK room temperatures (20°C/60%), tank sizes, wattage and warranties from Meaco's and EcoAir's published specifications, read UK owner reviews and the questions people ask on Mumsnet and r/HousingUK, and re-checked every listing and its seller on 29 October 2026. Running costs use Ofgem's October to December 2026 cap of 26.32p per kWh. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.

Bedrooms are where condensation and mould often hit hardest, because we breathe moisture into a closed room all night while the walls cool down. A dehumidifier is the most reliable fix when trickle vents and a bit of background heat aren't enough, but it needs to be one you can actually sleep next to.

We've picked five that suit bedrooms, small rooms and flats: three compressor models for normal heated rooms and two desiccant models for cold rooms. For each, we've worked out what eight hours overnight costs at the current price cap. If your windows are streaming every morning, our guide on how to stop condensation in a bedroom covers the free fixes to try alongside one.

Who this guide is for: Anyone with condensation, a musty smell or mould spots in a bedroom, nursery, box room or small flat who wants a dehumidifier quiet enough to run at night. If you're mainly drying washing, see our dehumidifiers for drying clothes instead.

Black Friday tip: Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026. If you need this now for the cold or damp, don’t wait weeks for a possible discount. The Arete Two is Meaco's small-home model, and it's the one we'd point most people to for a bedroom. Meaco says it suits studios, flats, 1–2 bed homes and single rooms, and keeps working even below 10°C, which is colder than most compressor units like. Night mode, which Meaco quotes at 35dB on the low fan, turns the lights down, and the humidistat lets it idle once the room reaches your target.

It's cheap to run: 136W at 20°C/60% means 0.136 × 8 = 1.088kWh over eight hours, or about 29p a night at 26.32p per kWh. It also has a HEPA filter, so you can run it as an air purifier on dry days. The trade-off is a 2.5-litre tank and 4.19 litres a day of extraction at 20°C/60% (Meaco's figure): fine for a bedroom, but too small for a whole damp house. Sold by Meaco direct and by Meaco UK on Amazon when we checked.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Night mode quoted at 35dB
  • Very low running cost
  • Humidistat and HEPA filter
  • 5-year warranty (Meaco)

Watch-outs

  • Small 2.5L tank
  • Not enough for a whole damp house

The ABC 12L is Meaco's straightforward compressor model: no app or air purifier, but it carries the Quiet Mark, Meaco quotes it from 36dB, and it has a humidistat and a 6-hour laundry mode for washing days. Meaco's figure is 5.18 litres a day at 20°C/60%, a little more than the Arete Two.

At 149W, eight hours uses 0.149 × 8 = 1.192kWh, or about 31p a night. The warranty is two years rather than five, which is the main reason to pay more for the Arete Two. In stock at Meaco (black and silver; white was out) and on Amazon (sold by Meaco UK) when we checked on 29 October 2026.

Compressor dehumidifiers lose efficiency as a room gets cold. Desiccant models don't, and they give off a little warmth, which is handy in a spare room or box room you don't heat. Meaco says the DD8L Pro works from 1°C, and has a night mode that turns off the display lights and alerts and is engineered to run quietly in bedrooms. It also has app control and a 2-litre tank.

Running costs are higher. At the listed 231W, eight hours is 0.231 × 8 = 1.848kWh, or about 49p a night; on fan 3 (623W) it's about 16.4p an hour. In a heated bedroom, the compressor picks above are cheaper to run. Sold direct by Meaco; we couldn't match a current Amazon listing to this exact model with confidence, so we've linked Meaco only.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Works in cold rooms, from 1°C (Meaco)
  • Gives off gentle warmth
  • Night mode and app control
  • 3-year warranty

Watch-outs

  • Costs more to run than compressor models
  • Small 2L tank
  • Louder at high fan speeds

The DD1 Classic is a light 6kg desiccant unit with a 2, 4 or 8-hour timer, so you can set it to run for the first part of the night and switch itself off. EcoAir quotes 34 dB(A) in its quiet mode, and its E7S economy system switches between full power, economy and standby, which EcoAir says can cut energy use by up to 40%. There's tilt and full-tank shut-off and a drainage hose.

The current Amazon listing doesn't state the wattage, so we haven't worked out a nightly cost for it. As a guide, the DD1 Simple below is listed at 300W on low, which would be about 63p for eight hours, and the timer helps you avoid running it all night. Sold by Amazon when we checked.

What owners and reviewers like

  • 2, 4 or 8-hour timer
  • 34 dB(A) quiet mode
  • Light and easy to move
  • Sold by Amazon

Watch-outs

  • Wattage not on the listing
  • Desiccant: dearer to run than compressor models
  • Mixed long-term reliability reports

The DD1 Simple is the stripped-back DD1: one rotary dial, no timer and no humidity display. EcoAir rates it at up to 7.5 litres a day, quotes 34 dB(A) in its quiet setting and says it works from 1 to 40°C. It weighs 6kg, so it's easy to move between a box room and the landing.

On low (300W), eight hours uses 0.3 × 8 = 2.4kWh, which is about 63p at 26.32p per kWh; on high (580W) it's about 15.3p an hour. With no timer or humidistat display, it suits someone who'll switch it on in the evening and off at bedtime. Sold by Amazon; only 7 were left when we checked.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Very simple to use
  • Light at 6kg
  • Works in cold rooms

  • Compressor or desiccant? In a bedroom heated to normal room temperature, a compressor model (Arete Two, ABC 12L) is cheaper to run. In a cold room below about 15°C, a desiccant model (DD8L Pro, EcoAir DD1) keeps working and adds a little warmth, but uses more power.
  • Night mode. Look for one that dims or turns off the display and lowers the fan. Bright LEDs are the most common complaint about running one in a bedroom.
  • A humidistat lets it switch down once the room reaches your target (around 50–55%), which saves energy and noise.
  • Tank size. Small models have 2–2.5 litre tanks. In a damp room you may need to empty them each morning; check for full-tank auto shut-off.
  • Size and placement. Small units are fine for a bedroom. Put it on a hard, level floor with space around it, away from curtains and the bed.

For a bigger home or whole-house damp, see our main guide to the best dehumidifiers, and for unheated rooms, our desiccant dehumidifier guide.

If you're weighing a dehumidifier against an air purifier, our dehumidifier vs air purifier vs moisture trap guide explains the difference: only a dehumidifier lowers the humidity.

The working is: watts ÷ 1,000 × 8 hours = kWh, then kWh × 26.32p (Ofgem's October to December 2026 cap). These are the makers' stated wattages; real costs are usually lower once the humidistat kicks in.

For comparison, running a 1,000W heater flat out for the same eight hours would use 8kWh, or up to 211p a night. A dehumidifier won't replace heating in a cold room, but it's the cheaper way to deal with the moisture.

Yes, plenty of people do. Choose one with a night mode, set the humidistat to around 50–55% so it isn't running flat out, and empty the tank before bed so it doesn't stop (or beep) at 3am. Don't set it too low: below about 40%, many people find the air feels dry, which can irritate the eyes, nose and throat.

If you're a light sleeper, run it for a couple of hours in the evening with the door shut, then switch to night mode or off at bedtime, and open the trickle vents overnight. A cheap hygrometer helps you see whether that's enough. If mould has already appeared, clean it off first: our guide to getting rid of black mould explains how to do it safely.

Near the source of the moisture, with air around it: often near the window or the coldest outside wall, but not touching curtains. Keep it on a hard, level floor, at least the clearance the manual asks for from walls and furniture, and away from the bed so the airflow and hum don't bother you. Close the bedroom door while it's running, so it dries that room rather than the whole house.

FAQs

What size dehumidifier do I need for a bedroom?

For a single bedroom or small flat, a small compressor model rated around 10–12 litres a day (at test conditions) is usually enough. At more realistic UK conditions of 20°C/60%, that's about 4–5 litres a day. Choose a bigger 20L model only if you're drying washing or dealing with a whole damp house.

Is it safe to leave a dehumidifier on overnight?

Generally yes, if you follow the manual: a hard, level floor, clear space around it, a plug socket rather than an extension lead, and auto shut-off when the tank is full. Check that it's in good condition and don't cover it.

What is the quietest dehumidifier for a bedroom?

Of our picks, Meaco quotes 35dB for the Arete Two on its low fan in night mode and from 36dB for the ABC 12L. EcoAir quotes 34 dB(A) in its DD1 quiet modes. Quoted figures aren't measured the same way by every maker, so treat them as a rough guide.

How much does it cost to run a dehumidifier overnight?

At 26.32p per kWh, about 29p for eight hours on a 136W Meaco Arete Two, 31p for a 149W ABC 12L, 49p for a desiccant DD8L Pro at 231W and about 63p for an EcoAir DD1 Simple on low (300W).

Should I use a compressor or desiccant dehumidifier in a bedroom?

Compressor if the bedroom is heated to normal room temperature, because it's cheaper to run. Desiccant if the room is cold (below about 15°C), because it keeps working and gives off a little warmth.

What humidity should I set a bedroom dehumidifier to?

Around 50–55% is a sensible target in winter. It's low enough to stop condensation and mould on most surfaces without making the air feel dry.
