How we chose: I shortlisted running watches from the brands UK runners most often compare, from beginner-friendly watches to marathon and triathlon models, and left out general smartwatches that aren't built around running. For each I checked the maker's UK page or Amazon listing for GPS battery life, smartwatch battery life, screen type, maps and music. On 25 October 2026 I reopened every Amazon.co.uk listing with a UK delivery postcode to check it was in stock with an add-to-basket button, and noted who sells it. I don't show prices, because they change daily. I haven't tested these watches myself. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.

A running watch tracks your pace, distance and route with its own GPS, so you can leave your phone at home, and records heart rate to show how hard you're working. The things that separate them are GPS battery life, the screen, and extras such as maps, music and contactless payments.

Garmin is the brand most UK runners start with, and its Forerunner range covers every level. COROS, Suunto, Amazfit and Polar are strong alternatives, often with longer battery life or a lower price. Heart rate, sleep, recovery and training scores are estimates, useful for trends, and none of these watches is a medical device.

Also see our fitness trackers guide for slimmer bands, protein powder and, for the treadmill months, walking pads.

Who this guide is for: Runners from beginners training for a first 5K to marathon runners and triathletes, and anyone buying a present for a runner. All the watches here work with iPhone and Android phones through the maker's free app.

Black Friday tip: Running watches, especially Garmin, are often reduced on Black Friday, and older models drop when new ones arrive. Note today's price and check the price history before you buy. Our Black Friday deals page explains how to check a deal is genuine.

For runs up to a couple of hours, any watch here is fine. For marathons, ultras or a week away without a charger, look at GPS hours: the COROS PACE 4 (41 hours), Polar Pacer (35 hours) and Forerunner 970 (26 hours) last longest. Using music, maps or multi-band GPS shortens battery life.

AMOLED screens (most watches here) are bright and sharp, like a phone. MIP screens, like the Polar Pacer's, are always on, very easy to read in sunlight and use less battery, but look duller indoors.

Built-in maps (Forerunner 970, Suunto Run 2, Amazfit Active 3 Premium) help on trail runs and in new places. Music storage lets you leave your phone at home. Garmin Pay is on some Garmins (Forerunner 170, 265, 970) but not the Forerunner 70. Decide which you'll actually use before paying for them.

Garmin Connect has the biggest choice of training plans and syncs with most apps. COROS, Suunto, Amazfit and Polar apps all sync with Strava. If you already use one ecosystem, stay with it so your history carries over.

FAQs

What's the best running watch in the UK?

For most runners, the Garmin Forerunner 265: an AMOLED screen, up to 20 hours of GPS and music storage. On a budget, the Forerunner 165; for maps and everything else, the Forerunner 970.

Which running watch has the best battery life?

Of the watches here, the COROS PACE 4: up to 41 hours of GPS and 19 days of daily use, according to COROS.

Do I need a running watch, or is my phone enough?

A phone app works, but a watch lets you see pace and heart rate on your wrist and run without carrying your phone. It's worth it if you run regularly or follow a training plan.

Is Garmin worth it over cheaper brands?

Garmin has the most complete app and training plans. COROS, Suunto and Amazfit often give more battery or maps for the money. Both are good choices; pick the app you prefer.

Can a running watch measure heart rate accurately?

Wrist heart rate is fine for steady runs but less accurate in fast intervals. For more accuracy, pair a chest strap. All heart rate, sleep and recovery figures are estimates, not medical readings.
