How we chose: I shortlisted protein powders from the brands UK gym-goers and runners most often buy, covering standard whey, whey isolate, clear whey and plant-based blends at a range of budgets, and left out anything sold as a diet, "lean" or meal-replacement product. On 25 October 2026 I opened each product page on Myprotein, Holland & Barrett and Amazon.co.uk to check it was in stock and noted the serving size and protein per serving the maker quotes. I don't show prices, because protein powder is discounted so often, and I haven't tried these products myself. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.

A protein powder is a quick way to add protein to a shake, porridge or smoothie. Most people use one after training or as a convenient snack. It isn't essential: most people can get enough protein from food, and a powder is simply a convenient extra.

The main choice is the type: classic whey (from milk, the most popular and usually the cheapest per serving), whey isolate (more filtered, with more protein and less lactose per scoop), clear whey (a light, fruity drink rather than a milkshake) and plant-based blends for vegans or anyone avoiding dairy.

Who this guide is for: Adults who train regularly or want a convenient source of protein. Protein powders are food supplements, not medicines. If you're pregnant, have a kidney condition or any other medical condition, or are buying for a teenager, check with a GP or pharmacist first. Whey contains milk, so check the allergen information.

Black Friday tip: Protein powder is one of the most heavily discounted products around Black Friday and in January, especially on Myprotein, which runs frequent sales. If you use it regularly, a bigger pack in a sale usually works out cheaper per serving. Check the flavour and pack size before you buy, as each is priced separately.

Standard whey is the cheapest and creamiest. Whey isolate has more protein and less lactose per scoop. Clear whey is a fruity drink you mix with water. Plant blends (pea, fava, rice) are dairy-free and vegan, with a thicker texture. If milk doesn't agree with you, try an isolate or a plant protein.

Brands quote protein per serving, but servings differ (25g, 31g, 40g scoops). Compare the protein per serving and the number of servings in the pack to work out real value. Most powders here give 21g to 30g of protein per serving; the organic whey gives about 18g.

If you're drug-tested in sport, choose a product with the Informed Sport mark, which means batches are tested for banned substances. Applied Nutrition Critical Whey and Holland & Barrett Precision Engineered whey carry it here; check the current label or the Informed Sport website for others.

Most powders use sucralose or similar sweeteners; some flavours use naturally derived sweeteners, and some organic powders, like The Organic Protein Company's, use sugar instead. Whey contains milk. Buy a small pack first if you're unsure about a flavour.
