How we chose: I picked equipment that covers strength, mobility and cardio in an ordinary UK home, from small kit that stores in a drawer to a full-size rowing machine. For each item I checked the manufacturer's specifications on its listing or website, including weight range, size, maximum user weight and what's in the box. On 24 October 2026 I reopened every Amazon.co.uk listing with a UK delivery postcode to check it was in stock with an add-to-basket button, and noted who sells it. I don't show prices, because they change daily. I haven't tested this equipment myself. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.

You don't need a spare room to train at home. A mat, a set of resistance bands and one or two weights cover a surprising amount, from squats and lunges to rows, presses and stretches. Add a bench for more upper-body exercises, or a rowing machine if you want cardio without leaving the house.

The NHS recommends that adults do activities that strengthen the muscles on at least two days a week, alongside regular moderate activity. Home kit makes that easier to fit around work and family. Start lighter than you think, learn the movements, and build up gradually. A fitness tracker can log your workouts, and a smart scale can sit alongside it in the same app.

Before you buy, measure the space, think about the floor (a mat protects both the floor and the kit) and check who else in the house will use it: adjustable weights suit households with different strength levels.

Who this guide is for: Beginners setting up a small workout corner, people returning to exercise, and regular gym-goers who want to train at home on busy days. If you have a health condition, an injury or haven't exercised for a while, check with a GP or physiotherapist first.

Black Friday tip: Home gym kit is often reduced on Black Friday and again in January, when demand peaks. Note today's price, check whether the listing is for one item or a pair, and check the price history before you buy. Our Black Friday deals page explains how to check a deal.

A bar that wedges into a door frame without screws. Sportneer gives a maximum load of 135kg and says it fits frames 75cm to 94cm wide. It isn't suitable for glass, carved or hollow frames, or frames with cracks.

Measure your door frame before you order, and check the bar is secure before every use, as the fit can loosen over time. It's sold by Ohuhu & Sportneer Official and dispatched by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • No drilling
  • Packs away
  • Pairs well with resistance bands

Watch-outs

  • Only fits some door frames

  • Small space, small budget: a mat and a set of resistance bands.
  • Adding strength: a pair of adjustable dumbbells or one kettlebell.
  • More exercises: an adjustable bench for presses and supported rows.
  • Cardio: a rowing machine, if you have the floor space.

Buy the basics first and add kit as you work out what you'll actually use.

Fixed dumbbells are simple and quick to grab, but you need several pairs as you get stronger. Adjustable dumbbells replace a whole rack. Dial types like the Bowflex change in seconds; spinlock sets like the Yaheetech cost less but take longer to change. If several people will share them, adjustable is usually the better choice.

A rowing machine like the Concept2 needs about 2.7m by 1.2m to use, while bands, a mat and a kettlebell fit almost anywhere. Use a mat under weights to protect the floor, and set dumbbells down rather than dropping them, especially upstairs. Magnetic rowers and coated weights are the quietest choices for flats.

  • Warm up, start with lighter weights and learn the movement before adding load.
  • Keep kettlebells and dumbbells away from small children and pets.
  • Check doorway bars and bench pins before each use.
  • Stop if something hurts, and get advice from a GP or physiotherapist if you have an injury or health condition.

A simple plan, two or three short sessions a week, is easier to stick to than an ambitious one. A fitness tracker can remind you to move and log your workouts, and the NHS Strength and Flex plan, a free five-week programme with podcasts and how-to videos, is a good place to start. More ideas are in our Health & Fitness section.

FAQs

What equipment do I need for a home gym?

A mat, resistance bands and a pair of dumbbells or one kettlebell cover most strength exercises. Add an adjustable bench for more upper-body work and a rowing machine if you want cardio and have the space.

Are adjustable dumbbells worth it?

Usually, if you have limited space or several people training. The Bowflex SelectTech 552i covers 2kg to 24kg in one dumbbell, but the listing is for a single dumbbell, so you'll need two for a pair.

What weight kettlebell should a beginner use?

Start light and learn the technique first. Many beginners start between 4kg and 12kg depending on the exercise and their experience. Mirafit makes them from 4kg to 32kg.

Is a rowing machine good for home workouts?

Yes. Rowing is low-impact and works the legs, back and arms together. A Concept2 needs about 2.7m by 1.2m of space to use; a folding magnetic rower like the JLL stores more easily.

How often should I do strength exercise?

The NHS recommends muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days a week, alongside regular moderate activity.

Have you tested this equipment?

No. This guide is based on manufacturers' specifications, retailer listings and independent advice. I don't own or test the products. See how we research.

Do you get commission?

Yes. If you buy through links on this page, Amazon may pay me a small commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn't affect which products are included. See the affiliate disclosure.
