Best SAD lamps and wake-up lights for dark UK winter mornings

Dark mornings and grey afternoons get to a lot of us between October and March. A 10,000 lux light box on your desk or a sunrise alarm clock by the bed won't suit everyone, but many people find they help. Here are seven worth considering, with what the NHS says before you buy.

How we chose: We compared SAD lamps and wake-up lights on Amazon.co.uk from specialist and established brands, checking brightness and the distance it's measured at, light area, UV filtering, medical device status, features and warranty from listings and manufacturers. We looked for recurring themes in Amazon.co.uk owner feedback and left out a model with frequent reports of early failure. Health information comes from the NHS and Mind. This guide isn't medical advice: if you think you have seasonal affective disorder, speak to a GP. We have not personally tested these products; this is a research-based roundup. Our research process.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that usually happens in winter. The NHS says it's thought to be linked to reduced daylight, and that treatments include talking therapies, antidepressants and light therapy. Light therapy means sitting near a very bright lamp, for a set time each day, to simulate daylight. The NHS says it isn't usually available on the NHS because there isn't enough evidence to tell whether it's effective, but many people find it helps.

If you decide to try one, the NHS says to make sure it's bright enough (10,000 lux is standard), UV-free and has a UKCA or CE mark, and to follow the manufacturer's instructions. It also says to speak to a GP first, because light therapy may not suit people with certain eye conditions or taking medicines that increase sensitivity to light. All the light boxes below are 10,000 lux and UV-free, according to their makers. We've also included wake-up lights, which are much dimmer but make dark mornings easier.

Who this guide is for: Anyone who struggles with dark winter mornings and short days, home workers in dim rooms, and people buying a thoughtful gift for someone who dreads winter. If you have symptoms of depression, such as persistent low mood or losing interest in things you usually enjoy, see a GP rather than relying on a lamp. If your home office is cold as well as dark, our heated throws and ceramic heaters guides can help.

Black Friday tip: Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026, but if dark mornings are getting to you now, we wouldn’t wait weeks for a possible discount: a few extra weeks of light matter more. If it’s a gift, our Black Friday home buying guide explains how to check price history and spot a genuine deal.

The picks in detail

1
Best overall light box

Lumie Vitamin L slim SAD light therapy box, white

Best for: Desk use at home, work or college

Type
Light box
Brightness (maker)
10,000 lux at 20cm
Good to know
Class IIa medical device, 3-year warranty

Lumie is a light therapy specialist, and the Vitamin L is its slim, desk-friendly light box. It gives 10,000 lux at 20cm from a generous 20 × 28cm panel of cool white LEDs behind a rippled diffuser, stands in portrait or landscape and is UV-free. Lumie recommends 30 minutes for winter blues and SAD symptoms. It's a class IIa medical device with a 3-year warranty, and it's sold by Amazon.

Owners say it brightens dark corners, makes winter days more bearable and is simple plug-and-play, with several reporting a better mood after a few days of use. The big panel means you don't have to sit as close as with smaller lamps.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Large light panel
  • 10,000 lux at a usable 20cm
  • Medical device, 3-year warranty

Watch-outs

  • Takes up desk space

Best budget

Beurer TL30UK compact SAD lamp, 10,000 lux, with travel pouch

Best for: Trying light therapy without spending much

Type
Compact lamp
Brightness (maker)
10,000 lux at 10cm
Good to know
Travel pouch, UV-free and flicker-free

A small, simple SAD lamp from German health brand Beurer, with an adjustable stand, one-button operation and a travel pouch. It's UV-free and flicker-free LED, and Beurer quotes 10,000 lux at a distance of 10cm. It's sold by Amazon.

Owners say it's bright, compact enough to fit in a rucksack and good value, with reports of better mood and energy during the day. The catch is the 10cm distance: to get the full 10,000 lux you need to sit very close, which is less comfortable than a bigger panel like the Lumie Vitamin L.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Inexpensive
  • Compact and portable
  • UV-free and flicker-free

Watch-outs

  • Full brightness only at 10cm
  • Small light area

5
Best wake-up light

Lumie Bodyclock Spark 100 wake-up light alarm clock

Best for: Waking up gently in the dark

Type
Wake-up light
Brightness (maker)
Dimmable; much dimmer than a light box
Good to know
Class I medical device, 3-year warranty

A 30-minute sunrise wakes you gradually with light, using mixed LEDs that mimic the colours of a real sunrise, and a 30-minute sunset helps you wind down at night, fading to off or a nightlight. Snooze is a tap on top, and the display dims automatically at night. Lumie says it's a certified class I medical device with a 3-year warranty. It's sold by Amazon.

Owners say it's especially good on dark winter mornings, they like the warm sunrise and sunset, and it looks good in a bedroom. Ease of use and the alarm features get mixed comments. Mind notes that some people with winter SAD find a lamp or alarm clock that simulates dawn helpful.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Gradual, natural-coloured sunrise
  • Sunset for bedtime
  • 3-year warranty

Watch-outs

  • Not a substitute for a light box
  • Some find the settings fiddly

Philips Wake-up Light with sunrise simulation and 5 natural sounds (HF3519/01)

Best for: People who want fine control over brightness

Type
Wake-up light
Brightness (maker)
Up to 300 lux, 20 settings
Good to know
Sunset, midnight light, 5 sounds

A 30-minute sunrise simulation with 20 brightness settings up to 300 lux, according to Philips, plus sunset simulation, a midnight light, tap-to-snooze and five natural alarm sounds. The display can be dimmed at night. It's sold by Amazon.

Owners say it genuinely changes their mornings and helps them wake feeling refreshed, though it's not the most user-friendly to set up and many dislike the alarm sounds. At 300 lux, it's a gentle wake-up aid rather than a light therapy lamp.

  • Fine brightness control
  • Sunset and midnight light
  • Trusted brand

Watch-outs

  • Alarm sounds criticised
  • Fiddly set-up

What to check before you buy

Using a SAD lamp sensibly

Follow the maker's instructions for distance, position and time: Lumie, for example, recommends 30 minutes at 10,000 lux with the Vitamin L. Set it up where you already sit every day, such as the breakfast table or your desk, so it becomes part of your routine.

The NHS also suggests getting as much natural daylight as you can, ideally outside every day, regular exercise, keeping in touch with friends and family, and going to bed and getting up at the same times. A lamp works best as part of that routine, not instead of it.

When to speak to a GP

Speak to a GP before trying light therapy, especially if you have an eye condition or take medicines that make you more sensitive to light. Mind says this can include St John's wort, some antipsychotics and some antibiotics. See a GP if you think you might have SAD or if treatment isn't helping. The NHS says that if you're 18 or over (or 16 or over in some areas), you can also refer yourself to an NHS talking therapies service. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call NHS 111 or, in an emergency, 999.

FAQs

Do SAD lamps work?

The NHS says light therapy isn't usually available on the NHS because there isn't enough evidence to tell whether it's effective, but many people find it helps their symptoms. Speak to a GP before trying one.

How bright should a SAD lamp be?

The NHS says 10,000 lux is standard. Check the distance it's measured at: 10,000 lux at 20cm is easier to use than 10,000 lux at 10cm.

How long should I use a SAD lamp each day?

Follow the maker's instructions. Lumie, for example, recommends 30 minutes at 10,000 lux for winter blues and SAD symptoms with its Vitamin L.

Is a wake-up light the same as a SAD lamp?

No. Wake-up lights brighten gradually to wake you and are much dimmer than a 10,000 lux light box. Some people with winter SAD find them helpful alongside other treatment.

Who shouldn't use a SAD lamp?

The NHS says light therapy may not be suitable if you have certain eye conditions or take medicines that make you more sensitive to light. Check with a GP first.

Are SAD lamps a good Christmas present?

They can be for someone who dreads dark winters, but it's a personal gift. A wake-up light is a gentler choice if you're not sure. Gift it early, because the darkest weeks are in December and January.
