How we chose: We compared sizes, heat settings, timers, fabrics, washing instructions and guarantees from manufacturer listings, read independent UK testing from Which?, Good Housekeeping and Expert Reviews, followed Electrical Safety First's electric blanket safety advice, and looked for recurring themes in Amazon.co.uk owner feedback. We have not personally tested these products; this is a research-based roundup. Our research process.

A heated throw is an electric blanket designed to go over you rather than under you. It has thin heating wires sewn into a soft throw, a detachable controller and, on all the good ones, an automatic shut-off. Wrapped around you on the sofa or at your desk, it warms you directly for a few pence an hour, which is why heated throws have become one of the most popular winter buys in the UK.

The main things to compare are size (one person or two), the number of heat settings, how flexible the auto-off timer is, the fabric, and whether it's machine washable. If you mainly want to warm the bed, an underblanket is the better tool; see our electric blanket guide, which also covers two throws that we haven't repeated here. All seven picks below were in stock on Amazon.co.uk when we checked, and each comes with a UK plug.

Good Housekeeping's 2026 testing put Lakeland's StaySnug faux-fur throw top of its heated throws. It scored full marks for even warmth and a stable temperature, came through the wash test looking as good as new, and started warming within about ten minutes. It has nine heat settings and nine timer settings with automatic shut-off. Good Housekeeping measured about 0.155kWh in an hour, which it puts at roughly 4p.

Owners call it lovely quality, very soft and quick to warm, and some say it's good value for what you get. The Amazon listing is thin on detail, so we've taken the size from Good Housekeeping's test. Some owners wish it were bigger, and Good Housekeeping found it a squeeze in smaller washing machines and slow to dry. It's sold by Lakeland, and this listing is the rust/burnt orange colour.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Top scorer in Good Housekeeping's tests
  • Nine heat and nine timer settings
  • Even, stable warmth
  • Survives washing well

Watch-outs

  • Not the biggest throw
  • Bulky to wash and slow to dry
  • Sparse Amazon listing details

Beurer is a German health-products brand that makes a wide range of electric blankets, and the HD75 is its most-reviewed heated throw on Amazon UK. It's longer than most at 180 × 130cm, with six electronically controlled heat settings and automatic switch-off. Beurer's BSS sensor system is designed to prevent overheating and shut the throw down if there's a fault. It's rated at 100W, is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified and is machine washable. Good Housekeeping rated the Beurer Cosy HD75 highly for low running costs, estimating about 1p an hour.

Owners like how soft and cosy it is, and many buy it as a gift. Heat output gets mixed feedback: some find it plenty warm, while others wish the top setting were hotter. A few units failed early. It's sold by Amazon with a two-year manufacturer's warranty.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Longer than most at 180cm
  • Low 100W rating
  • BSS overheat protection
  • Sold by Amazon

Fabric

Yes, and tumble-dryable

Dreamland's Snuggle Up uses the brand's Intelliheat system, which it says warms the throw in about five minutes. It has six heat settings, overheat protection and a choice of 1, 3 or 9-hour auto shut-off. The velvet plush fabric is machine washable and safe to tumble dry once you detach the controller. Which? has included Dreamland throws in its heated throw testing, and this one is sold by Imetec UK, the company that owns Dreamland.

Owners say it's good quality, comfortable and big enough for two to sit under while watching TV, and that it works out cheaper than putting the heating on. As with most throws, a minority report it failing within the first year, so keep your receipt. Other colours are on separate listings.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Claimed five-minute heat-up
  • 1, 3 or 9-hour auto-off
  • Washable and tumble-dryable
  • Sold by the brand's UK owner

Cosiest feel

Silentnight Luxury Super Cosy Heated Throw, 120 × 160cm

Best for: Anyone who wants a thick, chunky throw that feels warm even when it's off

Size
120 × 160cm
Heat settings
9
Auto-off / timer
Auto-off after 2 hours (adjustable)
Fabric
Jacquard flannel fleece and sherpa
Washable
Yes

Silentnight's Super Cosy is the thick, snuggly option, with a jacquard-effect flannel fleece and sherpa that makes it feel like a proper blanket. It has nine heat settings and HeatSafe overheat protection. It switches itself off after two hours unless you set a longer time, and Silentnight recommends settings 1–2 for long use. It's machine washable, comes with a three-year manufacturer's guarantee and is sold by Amazon.

Owners say it's great quality, very warm and big enough for two to snuggle under, and many like the neutral colours. Silentnight warns against folding or scrunching it while it's on, as that can create hot spots and trigger the safety cut-out. Reliability feedback is mixed, with a few failing after a few days, so test it as soon as it arrives.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Thick, cosy sherpa-style fabric
  • Nine heat settings
  • Three-year guarantee
  • Sold by Amazon

Watch-outs

  • Default two-hour auto-off needs resetting on long evenings
  • Some early failures reported
  • Heavier to wash and dry

Best timer and remote

Cosi Home Luxury Heated Throw, 160 × 130cm, digital remote

Size
160 × 130cm
Heat settings
10
Auto-off / timer
Programmable, up to 10 hours
Fabric
Micro-fleece, double-sided
Washable
Yes

Cosi Home's throw is one of Amazon UK's best-selling electric throws. It's slightly wider than the standard size at 160 × 130cm and has the most settings of our picks: ten heat levels and a programmable timer of up to ten hours with automatic cut-off, controlled from a slim digital remote. The double-sided micro-fleece is machine washable once you detach the remote and cable, and the listing mentions overheat protection. Cosi Home quoted a running cost from 3p an hour in October 2024.

Owners say it's warm, cosy and much cheaper than the central heating, with one comparing it to sitting next to a fire. They also like the look and how quickly it heats. The recurring complaint is durability, with several reporting failures within a couple of months. It's sold by One Retail Group, a third-party seller.

What owners and reviewers like

  • 10 heat settings and timer up to 10 hours
  • Easy-to-read digital remote
  • Wide enough for two
  • Machine washable

Watch-outs

130 × 160cm
Heat settings
6
Auto-off / timer
10 timer settings; auto-off at 8 hours
Fabric
Flannel, double-sided

Yes, 30°C

Bedsure's flannel throw is one of the cheapest from a brand with a big Amazon presence. Despite the price, it has six heat levels, ten timer settings, a pre-heat function and an eight-hour maximum auto-off. It's rated at 120W and is machine washable at 30°C once you detach the controller. Bedsure says it carries GS, CE and RoHS certification. Expert Reviews tested a Bedsure heated throw and found impressive heat, but a thinner, less luxurious blanket than its rivals.

Owners like how soft it is and say it's good value. Heat output, durability and thickness all get mixed feedback: some find it very warm and fairly thick, while others say it doesn't get hot enough or failed after a couple of months. It's sold by Bedsure's own store on Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Low price
  • Six heat levels and ten timer settings
  • Washable at 30°C
  • Independent test found good heat

200 × 150cm
Heat settings
6
Auto-off / timer
Automatic switch-off
Fabric

If you share the sofa, a standard 120 × 160cm throw soon becomes a tug of war. Beurer's HD150 is the biggest of our picks at 200 × 150cm, large enough to cover two adults or one tall one from shoulders to toes. It has the same six electronically controlled heat settings, BSS overheat protection, automatic switch-off and Oeko-Tex certification as the smaller HD75, and it's rated at 110W.

Owners love the size and softness. As with the HD75, some wish it got hotter, and there are reports of units failing within a month, so check it straight away and keep your proof of purchase. It costs more than the HD75 and is sold by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Extra-large 200 × 150cm
  • BSS overheat protection
  • Low power draw for its size
  • Sold by Amazon

Heated throw or electric blanket?

Beige sofa with cushions and a soft blanket draped across it
A 120 × 160cm throw covers one adult; go bigger if you share the sofa or want your feet tucked in. Photo: cottonbro studio / Pexels

Heated throws (overblankets) go over you on the sofa, in a chair or on top of the duvet. Electric underblankets strap onto the mattress under your sheet. They're built differently, and fire services warn that underblankets must never be used on top of you. For warming the bed, see our electric blanket guide. If the whole room is cold, a thermostat-controlled oil-filled radiator may suit better, though it costs much more per hour to run.

Size: one person or two?

Most heated throws are about 120 × 160cm, which covers one adult sitting down. If two of you share the sofa, or you want your feet covered, look for 130 × 180cm or bigger. Our largest pick is 200 × 150cm. Remember that bigger throws are harder to fit in the washing machine and take longer to dry. Buying one as a present? See our Christmas gifts for him under £50 for more practical ideas.

Running costs: pennies an hour

Heated throws are usually rated between about 100W and 160W, and they only draw full power while warming up or on high. A 100W throw running for an hour uses 0.1kWh, which is about 2.5p at an illustrative 25p per kWh. Which? found the cheapest throws it tested cost about 2p an hour on high, and the hungriest about twice that. Even a long evening costs well under the price of an hour of central heating for the whole house.

Safety: what to look for and how to use it

Choose a throw from an established brand, sold by a reputable retailer, with overheat protection and an automatic shut-off. Electrical Safety First's electric blanket advice applies here too. Check the throw and cable for scorch marks, worn fabric or exposed wires before using it each winter. Don't use it folded or bunched up, don't use it with a hot water bottle, and don't sit on the controller. Register it so you hear about recalls.

Manufacturers generally say heated throws aren't suitable for babies, young children, or anyone who can't sense heat or react to it, such as some people with diabetes or circulation problems. If you have a medical condition, check with your GP. Don't let pets chew the cable. Pet hair builds up quickly, so a cordless vacuum with a mini motorised tool is handy between washes, and if your dog travels with you, see our dog car seat cover guide.

Washing and storage

Almost every throw is machine washable once you unplug the controller. Use a gentle 30°C or 40°C wash as the label says, and only tumble dry if the label allows it (Dreamland's can be). Make sure it's completely dry before you plug it back in. Store it loosely folded or rolled, with nothing heavy on top, so the wires don't kink.

FAQs

How much does a heated throw cost to run?

Usually 1–4p an hour, depending on wattage, the setting you use and your tariff. Which? found the cheapest it tested cost about 2p an hour on the highest setting.

Can you fall asleep under a heated throw?

Heated throws aren't designed for overnight use. That's why they have auto shut-off timers. Set a sensible timer if you might nod off on the sofa, and don't use one in bed overnight.

Can I use a heated throw on my bed?

You can lay it over the duvet to warm the bed before you get in, if the manufacturer allows it. Switch it off when you go to sleep. Never put a throw under you as an underblanket.

Can you wash a heated throw?

Yes. Almost all modern throws are machine washable once the controller and cable are detached. Follow the label, and let it dry completely before using it again.

Is a heated throw cheaper than the heating?

For keeping yourself warm, yes, by a long way, because it warms you rather than the whole room or house. It won't help with damp or condensation, so keep rooms aired and reasonably heated. See our desiccant dehumidifier guide for cold, damp rooms.

Do you get commission?

Yes. If you buy through our links, Amazon may pay us a small commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn't affect which products we include. See our Affiliate Disclosure.
