How we chose: We compared power settings, thermostats, timers, room-size claims and guarantees from manufacturer listings, read independent UK testing from Which?, Ideal Home and Expert Reviews, followed Electrical Safety First's portable heater advice, and looked for recurring themes in Amazon.co.uk owner feedback. We have not personally tested these products; this is a research-based roundup. Our research process.

An oil-filled radiator is the gentlest type of portable electric heater. The element heats a sealed reservoir of oil, which warms the metal fins, so the heat comes out slowly and evenly, without a fan, and keeps radiating for a while after the thermostat clicks off. That makes them a good fit for long evenings in a living room, a home office during the day or a cold bedroom. They're slower to warm up than a fan heater and heavy to move, but much quieter.

One thing to be clear about: every plug-in electric heater turns electricity into heat at the same efficiency. An oil-filled radiator doesn't use less energy per hour than a fan heater of the same wattage. Savings only come from heating one room instead of the whole house and using the thermostat and timer well. The main choices are wattage for your room size, manual dials or digital controls, and whether you'd prefer a lighter oil-free column heater. All six picks were in stock on Amazon.co.uk with a UK delivery address when we checked, and all have UK plugs.

The Dragon 4 has been the benchmark oil-filled radiator in UK roundups for years, and Ideal Home and Which? both include it in their testing. De'Longhi's fin design uses what it calls a chimney effect to push warm air up through the vents faster than a basic column radiator. The 2kW model has three heat settings, a thermostat, an anti-frost setting and a 24-hour mechanical timer, and it arrives with pre-fitted wheels and a carry handle. De'Longhi rates it for rooms up to 60m³, which is roughly a 5m × 5m room with a standard ceiling.

Owners say it fills a room with warmth and reaches temperature in about half an hour. They like the timer, which can switch on and off several times a day, and the build quality. Some call it silent; others hear the usual ticks and clicks as the oil warms up. The mechanical timer's push-in segments are fiddly, which Ideal Home also mentions in its review of the bigger 2.5kW model. When we checked, the featured offer came from a third-party seller (Natures Warehouse) rather than Amazon or De'Longhi. Electrical Safety First advises buying heaters from reputable retailers, so check the seller and returns terms, or buy direct from a major retailer if you'd rather.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Proven design with independent test pedigree
  • Thermostat, anti-frost and 24-hour timer
  • Wheels and handle pre-fitted
  • Steady, fan-free heat

Watch-outs

  • Mechanical timer is fiddly to set
  • Heavy to carry upstairs
  • Featured offer from a third-party seller

The Radia S is De'Longhi's oil-filled radiator with a digital LED control panel. You set the room temperature, power level and an automatic start or stop time anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours ahead. Its Eco Plus mode picks the comfort level based on the current room temperature, and there's an anti-frost function and a safety thermostat. It weighs 10.6kg, arrives ready to use and has folding castors and a handle. De'Longhi rates it for rooms up to 60m³, and Which? includes the Radia-S in its oil-filled radiator testing.

Owners praise how quickly it warms a room, how easy it is to set up, and the range of temperature and timer settings. Several say it's the best heater they've owned. As with the Dragon 4, the featured offer was from a third-party seller when we checked.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Set an exact temperature on the display
  • Flexible digital timer
  • Eco Plus and anti-frost modes
  • Lighter than many 2kW oil radiators

Watch-outs

  • Pricier than basic models
  • Third-party featured seller
  • Digital panel isn't for everyone

3
Best value

Russell Hobbs RHOFR5001B 7-Fin Oil-Filled Radiator, 1.5kW

Best for: Bedrooms, home offices and smaller living rooms on a budget

Type
Oil-filled, 7 fins
Max power
1.5kW
Heat settings
3 (600W, 900W, 1.5kW)
Timer
No
Guarantee
2 years (with registration)

When we checked, this was the number one best-seller in Amazon UK's radiators chart. It's a straightforward 7-fin oil-filled radiator with three power levels (600W, 900W or 1.5kW), a variable thermostat, overheat and tip-over protection, carry handles and castors. Russell Hobbs suggests it for rooms up to about 15m², such as a double bedroom or small living room. The guarantee is one year, plus a second free year when you register it. It's sold by Amazon.

Owners say it knocks the chill out of a room, keeps small spaces cosy and switches off once it reaches temperature, and many like the gloss black finish. There's no timer, so you'll need a plug-in timer, which should be a good-quality, correctly rated one, or to remember to switch it off. At 1.5kW it won't heat a large, draughty room quickly.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Popular, low-cost pick sold by Amazon
  • Three power levels plus thermostat
  • Tip-over and overheat protection
  • Compact for bedrooms and offices

Watch-outs

  • No built-in timer
  • Too small for large rooms
  • Only one year's guarantee unless you register

Best for large rooms

Pro Breeze 11-Fin Oil-Filled Radiator, 2.5kW, with 24-Hour Timer

Best for: Bigger, draughtier rooms where 2kW isn't quite enough

Type
Oil-filled, 11 fins
Max power
2.5kW
Heat settings

Pro Breeze's 11-fin radiator offers more power than our other picks: 2.5kW on its top setting, with 1.5kW and 1kW options below, an adjustable thermostat and a 24-hour timer. It has tip-over and overheat protection, four wheels, a cable tidy and a carry handle, and the listing gives its weight as 11.3kg.

Owners say it warms rooms quickly and like the timer and the tool-free assembly. Durability is the concern: several report units failing within a couple of months, so buy with easy returns in mind and register any warranty. A 2.5kW heater draws about 10.4A, which a standard 13A wall socket handles. Don't run it from an extension lead.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Most powerful pick (2.5kW)
  • Thermostat and 24-hour timer
  • Tip-over and overheat protection
  • Wheels and cable tidy

Watch-outs

  • Mixed durability reports
  • Highest running cost per hour at full power
  • Third-party seller (One Retail Group)

5
Best oil-free alternative

Dimplex ECR20TIE Oil-Free Portable Radiator, 2kW, with Timer

Best for: Faster warm-up and a lighter heater you'll move between rooms

Type
Oil-free column
Max power
2kW
Heat settings
3 + thermostat
Timer
24-hour electronic
Guarantee
3 years (registration required)

Not every column heater has oil in it. Dimplex's ECR range looks like an oil-filled radiator but uses an oil-free element. Dimplex says it warms up to 30% faster and uses up to 9% less energy than an oil-filled radiator in its own test. That's the maker's claim, and the trade-off is that it holds less heat once it switches off. The ECR20TIE has three heat settings, a thermostat, an electronic 24-hour timer with an LCD screen, castors with a cable tidy, a 1.8m cable and a three-year guarantee when you register it. It's sold by Amazon.

Owners say it heats rooms quickly, holds a comfortable temperature, moves around easily and is good value. The most common complaint is that you can't select a specific temperature in degrees; the thermostat is relative rather than numbered. If you don't need a timer, the cheaper ECR15 or ECR20 manual models are alternatives.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Quicker warm-up than oil (Dimplex's claim)
  • Electronic 24-hour timer
  • 3-year guarantee
  • Sold by Amazon

Watch-outs

  • Cools down faster than oil-filled once off
  • Thermostat isn't in degrees
  • Less heat retention for long evenings

6
Best for small rooms

Dimplex Eco Chico Mini Oil-Free Radiator, 700W

Best for: Box rooms, small home offices and taking the edge off a bedroom

Type
Oil-free mini radiator
Max power
700W
Heat settings
Dial thermostat
Timer
No
Guarantee
3 years

For a small room, a 2kW radiator is overkill. The Eco Chico is a 700W mini radiator with Dimplex's oil-free element, a rotary thermostat dial and a slim freestanding base that sits flat to the wall. Dimplex describes it as near-silent and makes the same faster warm-up and lower energy claims as for the ECR range. It comes with a 1.3m cable and a three-year guarantee, and it's sold by Amazon.

Owners say it warms up quickly and keeps a small room at a steady temperature overnight. They like the compact, slightly retro look and use it in bedrooms, studies, summerhouses and caravans. With only 700W it's a top-up heater, so it won't warm a cold living room on its own. There's no timer.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Low 700W draw for small spaces
  • Near-silent, compact design
  • 3-year guarantee
  • Sold by Amazon

Watch-outs

  • Too small for larger rooms
  • No timer
  • Simple dial control only

Oil-filled, oil-free or fan heater?

Oil-filled radiators heat slowly but evenly and keep giving out heat after they switch off, so they're comfortable for long spells in one room. Oil-free column heaters such as Dimplex's ECR range look similar, warm up faster and are lighter, but cool down sooner. Fan and ceramic heaters are cheap and fast but noisy, and better for short bursts. Electrical Safety First notes that oil-filled radiators take longer to warm up but continue to give out heat after being switched off, and describes them as generally more economical to run. Per hour at the same wattage, though, every type uses the same electricity.

What it costs to run

Bare feet resting on a warm radiator beside a window
Heating just the room you're sitting in can cost less than heating the whole house, but only if you turn the main heating down. Photo: Karolina Grabowska (Kaboompics) / Pexels

Running cost is simply kW × hours × your unit price. At an illustrative 25p per kWh, a 2kW radiator on full power costs about 50p an hour, a 1.5kW one about 38p and a 700W mini radiator about 18p. Once the room is warm, the thermostat cycles the element on and off, so the real hourly cost is usually lower. Check your own unit rate on your bill or the Ofgem price cap page.

A portable heater only saves money if you turn the central heating down in the rest of the house. For warming yourself rather than the room, a heated throw or an electric blanket costs pennies an hour.

Choosing the right size

Makers quote room sizes in square metres (floor area) or cubic metres (volume). To convert, multiply the floor area by the ceiling height, which is about 2.4m in most UK homes. As a rough guide, a 700W–1kW heater suits a box room or small office, 1.5kW a double bedroom, 2kW a typical living room, and 2.5kW a large or draughty room. Older homes with single glazing or high ceilings need more. If the room is also damp, pair the heater with a dehumidifier: warmer air plus lower humidity cuts condensation. If that small office is where you work every day, our standing desk and office chair guides are worth a look too.

Safety: what Electrical Safety First recommends

Buy new from a known brand and a reputable retailer rather than an unknown third-party seller, check it has a UK three-pin plug, and register it so you hear about recalls. Stand it on a flat, stable floor at least a metre from curtains, bedding, furniture and paper. Never dry clothes on it or cover it. Plug it straight into a wall socket, not an extension lead, and check the plug and cable each winter for damage or scorch marks. Electrical Safety First says never to leave a heater unattended or use it while you're asleep. Fit at least one smoke or heat alarm per floor, and consider RCD protection. If you need to dry laundry indoors, use a heated clothes airer, which is designed for the job.

Thermostats, timers and anti-frost

The thermostat matters more than the power rating. Set it to a comfortable level rather than flat out and let it cycle. A timer lets you warm a home office before you start work or take the chill off a bedroom before bed. Anti-frost settings, on the De'Longhi models for example, switch the heater on at low temperatures to protect a cold room or conservatory.

FAQs

Are oil-filled radiators cheaper to run than other electric heaters?

Not per hour at the same wattage. All plug-in heaters are close to 100% efficient at turning electricity into heat. Oil-filled radiators feel more comfortable and keep radiating after the thermostat switches off, which can mean the element runs less often to hold a temperature.

Do oil-filled radiators need refilling?

No. The oil is sealed in at the factory and never needs topping up. Never try to open one. If you see oil leaking, stop using it and contact the seller or brand.

Can I leave an oil-filled radiator on overnight?

Electrical Safety First doesn't recommend running heaters overnight. If you do, it says an oil-filled radiator is a relatively low-risk choice, provided you keep everything combustible at least a metre away and have working smoke alarms. Better still, warm the room before bed: an oil-filled radiator keeps a room warm for a while after it's switched off.

Can I use an oil-filled radiator in a bathroom?

Only if the manufacturer says it's suitable and it's installed and positioned to meet bathroom electrical rules. Most portable radiators aren't designed for bathrooms. A fixed, properly rated heater is the safer choice there.

Can I plug a 2.5kW heater into an extension lead?

It's best not to. Heaters draw a lot of current for long periods, and Electrical Safety First recommends plugging them directly into a wall socket.
