How we chose: I compared spring bulb packs sold on Amazon.co.uk by established bulb sellers, including Thompson & Morgan, YouGarden and Humphreys Garden, in stock on 26 October 2026. Planting advice comes from Thompson & Morgan, Suttons and Crocus. I haven't grown these particular packs. Prices change often, so I don't quote them. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.
Late October and November are the perfect time to plant spring bulbs in the UK. Daffodils, crocus and alliums want to go in as soon as possible, and tulips are best planted in November, when the colder soil helps prevent the fungal disease tulip fire. Plant now and you'll have colour from February to June.
Bulbs are one of the easiest ways to brighten a garden or a few pots, and most come back year after year. I've picked packs for borders, pots and naturalising in grass, plus two indoor bulb gifts that make good Christmas presents.
Buying for a gardener? See our gifts for gardeners guide for tools, gloves and kneelers, and our Christmas gift guide for everyone else.
Who this guide is for: Anyone with a garden, patio or balcony who wants spring colour, from beginners planting a few pots to gardeners filling borders. The gifts suit anyone, including people without a garden.
Black Friday tip: Bulbs don't wait for Black Friday: the best choice is in September and October, and many sellers reduce what's left in November. Late bargains are fine for tulips, which you can plant into December, but plant daffodils and crocus as soon as you can.

Thompson & Morgan says most spring bulbs can be planted from September to November, and Suttons from September to December. Plant daffodils, crocus, alliums and hyacinths as soon as possible, and leave tulips until November: Crocus recommends planting tulips in November or December, when colder soil reduces the risk of tulip fire.
A common rule is to plant at two to three times the bulb's height, pointed end up. Tulips go a little deeper. In pots, you can layer bulbs: tulips at the bottom, daffodils in the middle and crocus near the top, for a long display from one pot, sometimes called a bulb lasagne.
Use peat-free multipurpose compost with some grit for drainage, and raise pots on feet over winter so they don't sit in water. Suttons recommends dwarf daffodils such as 'Tête-à-Tête' and patio mixes for pots.
Leave the leaves to die back naturally for about six weeks so the bulb can store energy for next year. Daffodils, crocus and alliums usually come back for years; many tulips flower best in their first year.
