Best hose reels: wall-mounted, auto-rewind, cart and expanding hoses
A hose left in a tangle on the patio kinks, cracks in the sun and trips people up. A reel keeps it tidy and makes watering, car washing and pressure washing quicker to set up. Here are seven reels and hoses on Amazon.co.uk, mostly from Hozelock, whose fittings are the UK standard.

How we chose: I compared popular hose reels and hoses on Amazon.co.uk, checking each listing on 21 October 2026 (with a UK delivery postcode) for an add-to-cart button, the hose length supplied (or the reel's capacity if no hose is included), the model number, the weight and the guarantee. I read recurring themes in owner feedback, especially assembly, kinking, rewinding and leaks, and cross-checked the auto reel against Expert Reviews' testing and Hozelock's guarantee terms. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.
There are four main types. Wall-mounted auto-rewind reels wind the hose back in with a spring after a tug. Enclosed and compact reels are wound by hand and can usually go on the wall or the ground. Hose carts have wheels, so you can take a long hose round a big garden. Expanding hoses stretch when the water's on and shrink back afterwards, and need no reel at all.
Most UK outside taps and accessories use Hozelock-style click connectors, which is why so many picks below are Hozelock. They're also the easiest to get spares for. Check the tap connector size you need (most outside taps take a threaded 3/4in connector) before you buy, and watch out for imports with US-style fittings.
Who this guide is for: Anyone with an outside tap who waters a garden, washes a car or uses a pressure washer (which needs a garden hose supply). For clearing autumn leaves, see our cordless leaf blowers.
Black Friday tip: Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026, and Amazon UK has opened its Black Friday Week sale about a week earlier in recent years. Before you buy, check the product’s price history: our Black Friday home buying guide explains how to spot a genuine deal and which picks to watch.

The picks in detail
Hozelock Auto Reel 30m wall-mounted auto-rewind hose reel (2403)
Best for: Front and back gardens where you want the hose back on the wall with one tug
- Type
- Wall-mounted, auto-rewind
- Hose supplied
- 30m plus feeder hose
- Weight
- 10.85kg
- Guarantee (maker)
- 3 years, plus 2 more if registered online
Pull out as much hose as you need, it locks at that length, and a tug lets it wind itself back in, guided neatly onto the drum. The reel pivots 180 degrees on its wall bracket, keeps the hose out of the sun, and has a child lock. Expert Reviews named the Hozelock Auto Reel its best wall-mounted hose kit, praising the easy rewind and the kink-resistant hose. Hozelock gives a three-year guarantee, plus two more years if you register it online.
Owners like not having to wind it. The recurring complaints are that it can be heavy to pull out and that the rewind sometimes stops short. Expert Reviews advises turning the water off before you let it rewind, and frost can damage the mechanism, so drain it or bring it in over winter. Keep your receipt and register it, because Hozelock asks for proof of purchase for guarantee claims.
What owners and reviewers like
- Auto-rewind with a lock
- Pivots 180° on the wall
- Up to five years' guarantee with registration
Watch-outs
- Heavy (about 11kg) to mount
- Rewind can stop short
- Needs protecting from frost

- Hose supplied
- 40m plus 2m connecting hose

A manual reel with an automatic layering guide, so the hose winds back evenly as you turn the handle. It comes assembled with 40m of Hozelock's premium hose plus a 2m connecting hose, and the case protects the hose from weather. A folding handle means you can lift it off the wall bracket and carry it. Hozelock lists a two-year guarantee and a full range of spares.
Owners say it's easy to reel in and out, simple to fix to a house wall and keeps things tidy for years. A few find the hose less robust than expected.
What owners and reviewers like
- 40m reaches most gardens
- Even winding with layering guide
- Supplied assembled
Watch-outs
- Hand-wound
- Heavy on the wall
- Shorter guarantee than the Auto Reel

Owners like the sturdy build and the hose strength. Assembly gets mixed reviews: Hagerty's test found the internal plumbing fiddly to put together, and some owners say rewinding can be awkward.

- Everything needed to start
- Protective casing
Watch-outs
- Fiddly assembly

Draper's cart has an anti-rust frame and a flow-through design with an angled connector to reduce kinks. It holds up to 45m of hose but doesn't come with one, so it suits anyone who already has a decent hose. It stands on the ground; wall brackets are sold separately (Draper stock no. 63642).
Owners say it does the job and is good value. Assembly instructions get criticised, with some saying it took over an hour.

Hozelock Superhoze 30m expanding hose with Aquastop fittings (8230)
Best for: Small gardens and balconies where there's no room for a reel
- Type
- Expanding hose (no reel)
- Hose supplied
- Expands to 30m
- Weight
- 1.4kg
- Guarantee (maker)
- 5 years
Expanding hoses stretch to about three times their length when the water's on and shrink back when it's off, so they store in a bucket or a hook. Hozelock's version has leak-free Aquastop fittings and a five-year guarantee. Hozelock says you need at least 3 bar of water pressure and should open the nozzle fully before use.
Owners love how light and easy it is. Durability is the catch: some report bursts after a year or so. Drain it and store it out of the sun to make it last, and don't use it for a pressure washer feed.
What owners and reviewers like
- Very light and compact
- Five-year guarantee
- Hozelock fittings
Watch-outs
- Some burst after a year or two
- Needs decent water pressure
- Not for pressure washer supply

Which type of reel?
- Auto-rewind wall reel: the tidiest and easiest, but the most expensive and heaviest to fit. Needs a solid wall and good fixings.
- Enclosed or compact reel: cheaper, wound by hand, and often usable on the wall or ground.
- Hose cart: for long gardens; wheel it where you need it.
- Expanding hose: no reel, lightest, but generally shorter-lived.
Measure from your outside tap to the furthest point you need to reach, add a few metres for going round corners, and buy that length. A longer hose than you need is just more to wind.
UK tap and hose fittings
Most UK outside taps have a threaded outlet, usually 3/4in, which takes a screw-on tap connector. Hozelock-style click connectors are the norm for hoses, nozzles and pressure washers. Some imported expanding hoses come with US-style 3/4in brass fittings, which won't click into UK accessories without an adapter, so check the listing.
Standard UK garden hose is 12.5mm (1/2in) diameter. Thicker 19mm hose carries more water but is heavier and won't fit every reel.
Winter care and hosepipe bans
Frost can split hoses, connectors and reel mechanisms. Drain the hose after the last use of the season, turn off and drain the outside tap if it has an isolating valve, and bring expanding hoses and auto reels in if you can.
During a dry summer, water companies can impose a temporary use ban (a “hosepipe ban”). Check your supplier's website. The RHS recommends watering in the morning or evening, at the base of plants rather than over the leaves, and a thorough soak less often rather than a sprinkle every day.

FAQs
Are auto-rewind hose reels worth it?
If you use the hose often, yes: one tug and it's put away, which means it's less likely to be left lying around to kink or split. Expert Reviews rates the Hozelock Auto Reel highly. The trade-offs are price, weight on the wall and a spring mechanism that can wear. Register a Hozelock reel for the extra guarantee.
How long a hose do I need?
Measure from the tap to the furthest point you need to water or wash, add a few metres for corners, and choose the next length up. 25–30m suits most average UK gardens; 40–50m suits long gardens.
Do expanding hoses last?
Owner reviews are mixed. They're light and convenient, but more prone to bursting than a standard hose. Drain them after use, store them out of the sun and frost, and choose one with a decent guarantee, like the Hozelock Superhoze's five years.
Can I use a hose reel with a pressure washer?
Yes, a pressure washer needs a garden hose feed. Use a standard hose rather than an expanding one, and unroll it fully so it doesn't kink or restrict the flow.
Do you get commission?
Yes. If you buy through the links on this page, Amazon may pay a small commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn't affect which products are included. See the affiliate disclosure.
