How we chose: I compared 13.5 tog and warmer duvets sold by Amazon or by the bedding maker on Amazon and in stock on 26 October 2026, using the makers' listings for filling, cover, tog, care and guarantee, and owner reviews for warmth and weight. I haven't slept under these duvets. Sizes are as linked; most come in single to super king. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.

A warmer duvet is one of the cheapest ways to sleep comfortably with the heating turned down. Tog measures how well a duvet holds in heat: 13.5 tog is the usual winter weight in the UK, and 15 to 18 tog is for very cold rooms or people who always feel the cold.

Synthetic hollowfibre duvets are cheap, washable at home and suit allergy sufferers. Wool regulates temperature well, so it suits people who get cold and then overheat. Goose down is the lightest for its warmth, but costs more and usually needs more care.

For extra warmth without a heavier duvet, see our electric blankets and weighted blankets guides. If the bed itself is the problem, see our mattresses and mattress toppers guides.

Who this guide is for: Anyone whose bedroom gets cold in winter, or who wants to keep heating bills down. If you share a bed with someone who runs hot, look at wool or an all-seasons duvet.

Black Friday tip: Duvets are often in Black Friday and January sales, but the popular 13.5 tog sizes can sell out once the weather turns. If your bedroom is cold now, a budget hollowfibre duvet is cheap enough not to wait for.

Tog
13.5
Filling
80% Hungarian goose down, 20% feather
Size linked
King (225 x 220cm)
Washable at home?
Yes, 40°C; tumble dry low

Snuggledown's goose down duvet has an 80:20 blend of Hungarian goose down and feather in a 300 thread count sateen cotton cover, with box-stitched baffle walls to stop the filling shifting. The down is RDS (Responsible Down Standard) sourced, and it's made in the UK with a two-year guarantee.

Down gives a lot of warmth for its weight, so it feels lighter than a synthetic 13.5 tog. It's the priciest duvet here. Don't buy it if anyone in the bed is allergic to feathers. On 26 October the king size was sold by Slumberdown on Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Light for its warmth
  • Cotton cover
  • RDS-sourced down

Watch-outs

100% British wool
Size linked

Wool is breathable and draws moisture away, so a wool duvet stays warm without getting clammy. This one is filled with 100% British wool in a cotton cover, made in the UK with a two-year guarantee, and it's naturally dust mite resistant.

Slumberdown suggests airing it rather than washing it often. It's a good choice for couples where one person runs hot. On 26 October the king size was sold by Slumberdown on Amazon.

Silentnight Warm & Cosy Duvet, 18 Tog Double Decker, Double

Best for: Unheated bedrooms and people who always feel the cold

Tog
18
Filling
Hollowfibre, two layers
Size linked
Double
Washable at home?
Yes

Silentnight's warmest duvet uses a 'double decker' design: two duvet layers sewn together with an air pocket between them. At 18 tog it's the warmest standard rating you can buy in the UK, so it's for genuinely cold rooms rather than most centrally heated bedrooms.

It's hypoallergenic, machine washable and has a five-year guarantee, but it's thick, so check your washing machine can take it. On 26 October the double was sold and shipped by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Warmest rating available
  • Five-year guarantee
  • Sold by Amazon

Watch-outs

  • Too warm for many heated bedrooms
  • Very bulky to wash

As a rough guide, 4.5 to 7 tog suits summer, 10.5 tog spring and autumn, and 13.5 tog winter. Choose 15 to 18 tog only if your bedroom is very cold or you always feel the cold. Two people share body heat, so a couple may be comfortable with a lower tog than someone sleeping alone.

If you can't decide, an all-seasons duvet is two lighter duvets that fasten together for winter. Check the combined tog before you buy.

Synthetic hollowfibre is cheapest, easiest to wash and best for allergies. Wool breathes and regulates temperature, so it suits hot-and-cold sleepers. Down is lightest for its warmth but costs most, and isn't suitable for feather allergies.

A UK double duvet is usually 200 x 200cm and a king 225 x 220cm. Many people buy one size up for a little extra width. A king or 13.5 tog duvet may not fit a small washing machine, so check the drum size or use a launderette.

Dunelm has a wide range of 13.5 tog duvets in-store and online, and Silentnight sells its duvets direct with a five-year guarantee on many of them.
