How we chose: We shortlisted popular, well-reviewed mattress toppers in UK sizes on Amazon.co.uk, compared materials, depths, care and guarantees from the manufacturer listings, read independent UK reviews including Which? and the Guardian, and looked for recurring themes in Amazon.co.uk owner feedback. We have not personally tested these products; this is a research-based roundup. Our research process.

A mattress topper is a layer of fibre, foam or springs that sits on top of your mattress, under the sheet. It changes how the bed feels: softer, more cushioned, cooler or more supportive on the surface. What it can't do is fix a mattress that's sagging, lumpy or broken, because the topper will sink into the dip too. If your mattress is basically sound but too firm, a bit tired or a cheap one in a spare room, a topper is a great-value upgrade.

There are three main questions: what type (fibre for soft and washable, memory foam or a hybrid for pressure relief, breathable fibre or cooling pads for hot sleepers), how deep (5cm is a gentle change, 7–10cm transforms the feel) and what size. UK beds come in single (90 × 190cm), small double (120 × 190cm), double (135 × 190cm), king (150 × 200cm) and super king (180 × 200cm). Most of the toppers below come in every size, and we've listed the size on the listing we link to. Check you've picked the right one before you buy.

Who this guide is for: Anyone whose mattress is too firm, a little worn or uncomfortable on the hips and shoulders, hot sleepers who want a cooler surface, and anyone kitting out a guest room, student room or sofa bed on a budget. If your mattress has a visible dip, broken springs or is very old, a topper won't solve it, and you'd be better saving towards a new mattress.

The picks in detail

1
Best budget topper

Silentnight Airmax Mattress Topper, 5cm, double (135 × 190cm)

Best for: A cheap, washable comfort boost for a firm mattress or a spare room

Type
Microfibre with Airmax mesh sides
Depth
5cm
Listing size
Double (other sizes on Amazon)
Washable
Yes, fully machine washable

The Airmax is one of the best-selling toppers in the UK and the one we'd start with on a budget. It adds 5cm of soft microfibre with Silentnight's signature mesh sides, which Silentnight says increase airflow to stop you overheating. It has anti-allergy fibres, elasticated corner straps and a two-year guarantee, and the whole thing goes in the washing machine. A 10cm version and other sizes are on separate listings. It's sold by Amazon.

Owners compare it to sleeping on a hotel bed and say it's much cheaper than replacing a mattress. Opinions on thickness differ: some find 5cm plenty, others wanted more cushioning. Like all fibre toppers, it flattens over time and needs shaking out. Which? says microfibre is the most affordable topper type but flattens faster than other materials.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Excellent value
  • Fully machine washable
  • Breathable mesh sides
  • Two-year guarantee; sold by Amazon

Watch-outs

  • 5cm feels thin to some
  • Flattens over time and needs fluffing
  • Won't fix a sagging mattress

2
Softest fibre topper

Silentnight Deep Sleep Mattress Topper, 10cm, double (135 × 190cm)

Best for: People who want a plush, sink-in hotel feel without memory foam

Type
Fibadown fibre, box-stitched
Depth
10cm
Listing size
Double (king on separate listing)
Washable
Yes, machine washable

If you want a big change in feel without foam, the Deep Sleep is 10cm of Silentnight's down-like Fibadown fibre. A quilted cover keeps the filling in place, and box-stitched edges and internal walls help it keep its shape right to the edges. It has elasticated straps, is hypoallergenic and is fully machine washable, though at this depth you may need a large-drum machine. It's sold by Branded_Bedding.

Owners say it feels like sleeping on a new bed and describe it as a fluffy cloud. It helps people fall asleep quickly and wake up without aches. Mixed feedback mentions it compresses where you lie, so it needs shaking out and turning, and it's quite warm. It's soft rather than supportive, so if you have back or hip pain, a memory foam topper may suit you better.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Very soft, deep and cosy
  • Box-stitched edges hold their shape
  • Machine washable
  • Good value for a 10cm topper

Watch-outs

  • Compresses and needs fluffing
  • Warm for hot sleepers
  • Soft, not supportive

3
Best memory foam from a big brand

Silentnight Impress Memory Foam Mattress Topper, 5cm, double

Best for: Side and back sleepers who want pressure relief on a firm mattress

Type
Memory foam, removable cover
Depth
5cm (7cm on separate listing)
Listing size
Double
Washable
Cover is removable and washable

Silentnight's Impress topper is 5cm of medium memory foam that moulds to your body, which Silentnight says suits people who sleep mostly on their back or side. It has a removable cover to keep it fresh, elasticated straps to hold it in place and is hypoallergenic. A deeper 7cm version and a king size are on separate listings. It's sold by Branded_Bedding.

Owners say it turned an old or stiff mattress into a comfortable bed, with many reporting pain-free nights and good support for aching joints. Some noticed a smell when it was new, which is normal for foam and fades if you air it. Memory foam feels warmer than fibre and responds slowly, so you sink in rather than bounce. That suits some people and not others.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Real pressure relief for hips and shoulders
  • Trusted UK brand
  • Removable cover
  • 7cm version available

Watch-outs

  • Warmer than fibre
  • New-foam smell at first
  • Costs more than fibre toppers

4
Best budget memory foam

EHEYCIGA Memory Foam Mattress Topper, 3cm, double (135 × 190 × 3cm)

Best for: A thin, fitted foam-and-fibre layer for a firm mattress on a tight budget

Type
Gel-infused memory foam plus fibre, quilted
Depth
3cm
Listing size
Double (king on separate listing)
Washable
Yes, cold wash, low tumble

EHEYCIGA's topper combines a cooling gel-infused memory foam layer with soft fibre filling under a quilted surface made partly from viscose derived from bamboo. It fits like a fitted sheet with an elastic skirt, so it doesn't slide around, and EHEYCIGA says it can be washed in cold water and tumble dried on low. It arrives vacuum-packed, so allow 48 hours for it to recover its full thickness. It's sold by EHEYCIGA EU, the brand's own store.

Owners say it's good quality, comfortable and well worth the price, and it makes a firm bed noticeably softer. Several say it's thinner than they expected, which is fair at 3cm. Think of it as a comfort layer and mattress protector in one, not a deep topper.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Cheap way to try memory foam
  • Fitted skirt stays in place
  • Machine washable
  • Huge number of reviews

Watch-outs

  • Only 3cm deep
  • Thinner than some expect
  • Brand isn't a household name

5
Best gel memory foam topper

Vesgantti Memory Foam Mattress Topper, 10cm with cooling gel, double (135 × 190cm)

Best for: Back and hip pain on a firm mattress, if you want a deep, supportive foam layer

Type
Gel memory foam plus bamboo charcoal foam
Depth
10cm (two 5cm layers)
Listing size
Double (king on separate listing)
Washable
Cover is removable and machine washable

Vesgantti's topper is two 5cm layers: gel-infused memory foam, which Vesgantti says keeps it cooler than ordinary memory foam, and bamboo-charcoal-infused memory foam. The high-density foam spreads your weight and reduces motion transfer, so you're less likely to feel a partner move. The knitted cover has a non-slip base, unzips and is machine washable. It's vacuum-packed and rolled in a box, so allow 24–48 hours for it to expand fully. It's sold by Vesgantti UK.

Owners say it stops backache and hip pain and strikes a good balance between soft and firm. Some found it a little smaller than their mattress, and at 10cm you'll need deep-pocket fitted sheets. Even with gel, deep memory foam holds more heat than fibre, so very hot sleepers may prefer the cooling options below.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Deep, supportive two-layer foam
  • Gel layer for a cooler feel than plain foam
  • Removable washable cover
  • Reduces partner disturbance

Watch-outs

  • Needs deep-pocket sheets
  • Still warmer than fibre
  • Takes up to 48 hours to expand

6
Best premium topper

Simba Hybrid Mattress Topper, king (150 × 200cm)

Best for: A big, supportive upgrade to a good mattress you plan to keep

Type
Hybrid: Aerocoil microsprings plus Simbatex foam
Depth
About 6.5cm (per independent reviews)
Listing size
King (other sizes on Amazon)
Washable
Cover unzips and is machine washable

British sleep brand Simba makes the only topper here with springs. It has up to 1,900 Aerocoil microsprings, which Simba says are unique to its toppers, under a layer of open-structure Simbatex foam that feels cooler than ordinary memory foam, on a high-density foam base. The plush cover unzips and is machine washable. It's a big, heavy topper at 16.5kg for this king size. A small double and other sizes are on separate listings. It's sold by Simba Sleep, Simba's own store.

The Guardian named Simba's hybrid topper its best overall in its tested UK roundup, though its reviewer found it could trap heat on warm nights. Amazon.co.uk owners say it's excellent quality and a great balance between soft and firm, and they wake up more refreshed with fewer aches. Most say it doesn't make them hot. It costs many times more than the other toppers here, so it makes most sense on a good mattress you plan to keep for years.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Springs plus foam: supportive and bouncy
  • Rated best overall by the Guardian
  • Washable cover
  • British brand, sold by Simba

Watch-outs

  • Much more expensive
  • Heavy to move and turn
  • Can feel warm on hot nights; some say it shifts

7
Best cooling budget topper

Niagara Sleep Solution Cooling Mattress Topper, bamboo viscose, double (135 × 190cm), deep fit

Best for: Hot sleepers who want a soft, breathable layer that's easy to wash

Type
Quilted pad, 40% bamboo viscose
Depth
Pillow-top pad (800gsm fill)
Listing size
Double (other sizes on Amazon)
Washable
Yes, machine washable

This quilted topper from Niagara Sleep Solution has a surface made from 40% viscose derived from bamboo, which feels cool and soaks up sweat, over an 800gsm fill. It fits like a fitted sheet, with extra-long elasticated sides for mattresses 8–20 inches deep, so it suits deep pocket-sprung mattresses as well as thin ones. It's machine washable and free from latex. It's sold by AC Global Distribution.

Owners say it's comfortable, stays in place like a fitted sheet and feels cooler than memory foam. Many say it's a big improvement for the price. The listing uses US-style sizing words like “queen”, but the double is 135 × 190cm, a standard UK double. It's a pad rather than a deep topper, so expect a softer, cooler surface, not a transformation.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Cool, breathable surface
  • Fits deep mattresses like a fitted sheet
  • Machine washable
  • Great value with a huge review base

Watch-outs

  • Thinner than a true topper
  • US-style size names on the listing
  • Not supportive

8
Best cooling add-on

Silentnight Restore Cooling Gel Mattress Pad, 60 × 90cm

Best for: Night sweats and hot flushes, as a cool spot on your side of the bed

Type
Cooling gel pad
Depth
Thin pad
Listing size
60 × 90cm (one person's side)
Washable
Wipe clean

This isn't a full topper. It's a 60 × 90cm gel pad with three gel compartments that sits on your side of the bed, under the sheet, and absorbs body heat. Silentnight designed it for menopausal night sweats and hot flushes, and says you can pop it in the fridge for extra cooling. It folds away and also works on the sofa or in the car. It's sold by Amazon.

Owners report sleeping through the night and waking up dry. The cooling effect gets mixed feedback: the gel absorbs heat quickly at first, but some say it warms up and stops feeling cool after a while. It's cheap enough to try alongside any topper, and it doesn't affect your partner's side of the bed.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Cool spot just for your side
  • Can be chilled in the fridge
  • Folds away; sofa and car use
  • Sold by Amazon

Watch-outs

  • Cooling effect fades for some
  • Covers a small area only
  • Mixed quality feedback

Which type of topper should you choose?

Bare white mattress on a bed frame in a modern bedroom
Measure your mattress depth as well as its width and length: deep toppers need deep straps or skirts. Photo: Max Vakhtbovych / Pexels

How deep should it be?

3–5cm adds a gentle layer of comfort and is easy to live with. It's the right choice if your mattress is only a little too firm. 7–10cm transforms the feel of the bed, which helps with a very firm mattress or pressure pain, but you'll need deep-pocket fitted sheets, and it's harder to wash and turn. If you're unsure, go for 5cm memory foam or a 5–10cm fibre topper.

Also measure the depth of your mattress. Deep pocket-sprung mattresses can be 25–30cm deep, and adding a topper on top needs straps or a skirt long enough to reach. Fitted-skirt toppers such as the Niagara and EHEYCIGA list the depth they fit.

Toppers for back pain, side sleepers and hot sleepers

Side sleepers usually like softer surfaces that let the shoulder and hip sink in, so 5–7cm memory foam or a hybrid is a good starting point. Back sleepers generally want something medium that keeps the spine aligned. Front sleepers often find deep, soft toppers make their back arch, so a thin fibre topper is safer.

For back pain, a topper can help if the mattress is too firm, but it won't fix one that's sagging. Speak to your GP or a physio about persistent pain. For hot sleepers, avoid deep plain memory foam and look at fibre with mesh sides, bamboo viscose or gel pads. A breathable cotton sheet and a lower-tog duvet make a big difference too.

Unpacking, smell and care

Foam toppers usually arrive vacuum-packed and rolled. Cut the packaging carefully, lay the topper flat in a well-ventilated room and give it 24–48 hours to expand fully before judging it. A slight new-foam smell is normal and fades with airing. Fibre toppers can go in the washing machine, but deep ones may need a large-drum machine or a launderette. For foam, wash the cover and spot-clean the foam. A washable mattress protector over the topper keeps it fresh for much longer. Which? points out that toppers generally can't be returned once used for hygiene reasons, unless they're faulty, so check the size and type carefully before you open the packaging.

Bedrooms with condensation problems can be hard on bedding. Pull the duvet back for a while each morning to let the bed air, keep the bed a little away from cold outside walls and see our guide to stopping condensation if your bedroom windows run wet.

Toppers with electric blankets and weighted blankets

If you use an electric underblanket, check both makers' instructions before putting it with a topper. Some electric blanket makers don't recommend using their blankets on memory foam, and you should never put an underblanket somewhere it can be folded or rucked. Fibre toppers are usually the safer pairing. A weighted blanket goes on top of you, not on the mattress, so it works with any topper. For cold evenings on the sofa, a heated throw is the cheaper way to keep warm.

FAQs

What's the best mattress topper in the UK?

It depends on what you want to change. The Silentnight Airmax is the best value, Silentnight's Impress is a good memory foam choice, and the Simba Hybrid is the premium pick. The Guardian rated the Simba hybrid topper best overall in its tested roundup.

Is a gel mattress topper worth it?

Gel memory foam usually feels a little cooler than plain memory foam, so it's worth it if you like foam but tend to overheat. It's still warmer than fibre or bamboo toppers. Vesgantti's 10cm topper and EHEYCIGA's 3cm topper both use gel-infused foam.

What's the best cooling mattress topper in the UK?

For a whole bed, a breathable fibre or bamboo topper such as the Niagara usually sleeps cooler than deep memory foam. For night sweats on one side of the bed, a gel pad like the Silentnight Restore adds a cool spot.

Will a mattress topper help a sagging mattress?

Not really. A topper changes the feel of the surface, but it will dip into any sag. If your mattress has a dip, lumps or broken springs, save towards a replacement.

What size topper do I need for a UK double?

135 × 190cm. A UK king is 150 × 200cm and a super king is 180 × 200cm. Check the depth of your mattress too, so the straps or skirt fit.

Can you wash a mattress topper?

Most fibre toppers are fully machine washable, though deep ones may need a large-drum machine. Memory foam toppers usually have a removable, washable cover, and the foam itself should only be spot-cleaned.
