Our top pick

How we chose: I compared current student laptop advice from Which? with laptops sold by Amazon or Laptops Direct and in stock on 26 October 2026. Specs come from Apple's UK tech specs pages and the retailers' listings. I left out third-party listings with very low stock. I haven't used these laptops myself. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.
Most students don't need an expensive laptop. Essays, research, presentations and video lectures run happily on a mid-range machine. What matters more is a battery that lasts a day of lectures, a weight you'll actually carry, and enough storage and memory to keep up for three or four years.
Which? suggests at least 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage for Windows or macOS, with 16GB and 512GB preferable, and a laptop under 1.5kg if you'll carry it around. Courses with video editing, 3D or engineering software need more power. I've picked laptops for each kind of student, from a Chromebook for school to a MacBook Air for creative work.
On a tight budget? Our laptops under £500 guide has more Windows options and Chromebooks. Setting up a study space? See our office chairs and standing desks guides.
Who this guide is for: University and college students, sixth-formers, and parents buying for them. Check your course's software list before you buy: some engineering and design software only runs on Windows.
Black Friday tip: Black Friday and the back-to-university season are the two big times for laptop deals. Apple rarely discounts its own prices, but retailers often do. Check Apple's and Microsoft's education stores too, and compare the exact spec before you buy.

The 13in MacBook Air with Apple's M5 chip now starts with 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage, which is the spec Which? recommends for students. Apple quotes up to 18 hours of video streaming, and it weighs 1.23kg. It has a backlit keyboard with Touch ID, a 12MP camera that keeps you in frame on video calls, two Thunderbolt 4 ports plus MagSafe charging, and supports two external displays.
It's the best choice here for photo editing and lighter video work. Apple's tech specs say the power adapter is sold separately, so budget for one if you don't have a USB-C charger of at least 30W. On 26 October this model was sold by Amazon; Laptops Direct also lists the MacBook Air range.

The MacBook Neo is Apple's cheapest MacBook, launched in 2026 with the A18 Pro chip from the iPhone. It has 8GB of memory, a 13in Liquid Retina screen, up to 16 hours of video streaming, and weighs 1.23kg, the same as the MacBook Air. This version has 512GB of storage and Touch ID; Laptops Direct also lists the 256GB version, which doesn't have Touch ID.
Which? says 8GB is fine for essays and research but not for intensive work such as video editing. The keyboard isn't backlit, it has two USB-C ports (one of them slower USB 2), and the power adapter is sold separately. On 26 October this model was sold by Amazon.

This version of ASUS's Vivobook S14 has far more memory and storage than most students need: 32GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD and an AMD Ryzen AI 7 445 processor, with a 14in Full HD OLED screen and a backlit UK keyboard. ASUS lists a 70Wh battery. Which? recommends a Ryzen 7 or Core 7 class processor for photo, video or engineering work.
Because it's a standard AMD laptop rather than an Arm-based one, older software and printers that work on Windows 11 should work on it. It's a Copilot+ PC, so it has Microsoft's on-device AI features. On 26 October it was sold by Amazon.
What owners and reviewers like
- 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD
- OLED screen
- Standard x86 processor for software compatibility

- Intel Core 5 120U / 8GB
- Storage

Which? says £400 to £600 buys a Core 5 laptop that's fine for heavy browsing and documents, and this HP 15 fits: an Intel Core 5 120U, 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. It has a camera with a privacy shutter and a large 15.6in screen.
It's bigger than the other laptops here, so it suits students who mostly work at a desk. There's no charger in the box: it charges over USB-C. On 26 October it was sold and shipped by Amazon for just under £500.
What owners and reviewers like
- Core 5 and 512GB for under £500

A Chromebook Plus with an Intel Core 3 processor and 8GB of RAM, which is generous for ChromeOS, plus a 14in Full HD screen. ChromeOS starts quickly, updates itself and runs well on modest hardware.
The catch for students is software: some courses need Windows or Mac apps that won't run on a Chromebook, so check first. On 26 October it was sold by Amazon, with only a few left.
What owners and reviewers like
- Quick for web-based work
- 8GB RAM
- Simple and secure
Watch-outs

ASUS Chromebook 14 CX1405, Intel Celeron N50, 4GB, 64GB eMMC
Best for: Secondary-school homework on a small budget
- System
- ChromeOS
- Chip / RAM
- Intel Celeron N50 / 4GB
- Storage
- 64GB eMMC
- Screen
- 14in Full HD
- Weight
- 1.39kg
A basic, affordable Chromebook for homework and Google Classroom. It weighs 1.39kg, opens flat to 180 degrees and has HDMI, USB-C and USB-A ports. Which? says 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage is enough for ChromeOS if files are kept in the cloud.
It isn't quick, and some owners find it slow with lots of tabs open, so it's a school laptop rather than a university one. On 26 October it was sold and shipped by Amazon.
What owners and reviewers like
- Low price
- HDMI port
- Fine for homework
Watch-outs
- Slow with heavy multitasking
- Only 64GB storage

Essays, research and presentations: a Chromebook, a Core 3 or Core 5 Windows laptop or a MacBook Neo is enough. Lots of tabs and documents at once: aim for a Core 5 or Ryzen 5 with 16GB of RAM if you can. Photo and video editing, engineering or 3D: Which? suggests a Ryzen 7, Core 7 or Snapdragon X class processor, or a MacBook Air or Pro rather than the Neo.
Always check your course's software list. Some engineering, statistics and design software is Windows-only, and Chromebooks can't run desktop apps.
If you'll be in lectures all day, look for a laptop rated for a full day of use and weighing under 1.5kg. Which? suggests under 1.5kg for a 13in laptop or under 1.8kg for a 16in one.
Apple's MacBooks and the HP and ASUS Windows laptops here don't include a power adapter. Most charge over USB-C, so one good USB-C PD charger can often cover a laptop and a phone. Check the wattage the laptop needs.
Apple's and Microsoft's education stores offer student pricing, and Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Samsung run student schemes too. Which? warns that a 'discount' isn't always the lowest price, so compare with retailers. Laptops Direct lists the MacBook Neo in several colours and storage sizes, plus refurbished laptops.
