How we chose: I compared popular oscillating multi-tools on Amazon.co.uk, checking each listing on 28 October 2026 (with a UK delivery postcode) for an add-to-basket button, the seller, the model number, the accessory fitting and what's in the box. Speeds and weights are the makers' figures from the listings. I read recurring themes in Amazon.co.uk owner feedback and used HSE guidance on vibration and dust for the safety notes. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.

An oscillating multi-tool moves its blade from side to side a tiny amount, thousands of times a minute. That small movement lets it cut in places a saw can't reach: trimming the bottom of a door frame so laminate slides under, cutting a hole in plasterboard for a socket, slicing through a nail, cutting out a damaged floorboard, or scraping old sealant and grout. Swap the blade for a triangular pad and it becomes a detail sander.

It's rarely the first power tool people buy, but it's often the one they say they'd never be without once they're renovating. The key choices are corded or cordless, and which blade fitting it uses, because blades are where the running cost is.

Who this guide is for: Anyone renovating or fixing up a home: fitting flooring, skirting, doors or kitchens, regrouting a bathroom, or doing awkward cuts. For larger sanding jobs, a dedicated detail sander is lighter and quicker. If you're cutting into walls, check for cables and pipes first with a cable detector.

The PMF 220 CE is Bosch's long-running green DIY multi-tool. It has a 220W motor with electronic speed preselection, Bosch's MagnetHold to keep the blade in place while you tighten it, a depth stop for flush cuts with the segment blade, and it takes Bosch's Starlock blades, which are widely sold in UK DIY shops. The box includes an 85mm segment blade for wood and metal and a delta sanding pad with sheets.

Owners call it versatile and easy to use, a great addition to any toolbox. Being corded, it never needs charging, which suits occasional use. If you'd like a case, scraper, plunge blade and dust extraction too, Bosch sells it as the PMF 220 CE Set for a little more.

In the box
Segment blade, plunge blade, sanding pad and 6 sheets, depth stop
Weight (maker)
About 0.8kg (body)

The UniversalMulti 18V-32 is the cordless equivalent of the PMF, on Bosch's green 18V Power for All batteries. It has electronic speed preselection, MagnetHold for quick Starlock changes and a four-stage depth stop. Unusually for a body-only tool, it comes with both a segment saw blade and a plunge-cut blade plus a sanding pad and six sheets, so it's ready to use if you already have a battery.

Owners call it a brilliant tool that makes quick work of jobs that would normally take ages. It's light at about 0.8kg without a battery. It's sold and shipped by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Light for a cordless multi-tool
  • Two blades and a sanding pad included
  • Shares batteries with Bosch green tools

Watch-outs

  • Battery and charger not included
  • Blade change needs a tool, unlike the AdvancedMulti

There's a 180° LED light band around the head, a four-stage depth stop, an anti-vibration handle and dust extraction that connects to a vacuum for sanding.

Owners call it brilliant and handy for all sorts of DIY jobs. It's heavier than the UniversalMulti and costs more, so it's worth it mainly if you'll use it often. It's body only and sold by Amazon.

Corded multi-tools are cheaper and never run flat, which suits occasional jobs. Cordless tools are much handier up a ladder, in a loft or outside, but most are sold body only. If you already have batteries from Bosch (green), DeWalt, Worx or Einhell, a bare tool from the same range is the best value.

Blades wear out, so the fitting matters. Bosch's Starlock blades are sold in most UK DIY shops and fit any tool with a Starlock mount, which includes some other brands. Several tools here (DeWalt, Worx) have a universal adaptor that takes most brands' blades. Bi-metal (BIM) blades cut wood with nails in it; high-carbon steel (HCS) blades are cheaper and for soft wood only.

  • A plunge-cut wood blade (about 32mm) for cutting holes and notches.
  • A segment blade for long, straight cuts and flush-cutting door frames.
  • A bi-metal blade for wood with nails or screws in it.
  • A grout blade (carbide) if you're regrouting tiles.
  • A rigid scraper for sealant, adhesive and old paint.

Oscillating tools vibrate, so take breaks on long jobs; the HSE explains how prolonged use of vibrating tools can harm hands and arms. Cutting and sanding make fine dust, so wear a dust mask (FFP2 or better), eye protection and ear protection. In homes built before 2000, some textured ceilings, old floor tiles and some boards may contain asbestos: don't cut or sand them, and get them checked first.

FAQs

What is an oscillating multi-tool used for?

Cutting in awkward places (door frames, floorboards, plasterboard, pipes and nails), scraping sealant, adhesive and grout, and detail sanding into corners. It's the tool for jobs a saw can't reach.

Can a multi-tool replace a sander?

For small areas and corners, yes, with a delta sanding pad. For a whole door or tabletop, a dedicated detail or orbital sander is lighter, quicker and collects dust better.

Do multi-tool blades fit any tool?

Not always. Bosch Starlock blades fit tools with a Starlock mount, and tools with a universal adaptor take most brands. Check the fitting on the tool listing before buying blades.

Is a corded multi-tool better?

For occasional use, often yes: corded tools are cheaper and never run flat. Cordless is more convenient, especially up ladders, and makes sense if you already own batteries from the same brand.

Have you tested these multi-tools?

No. This is a research-based roundup using the makers' specs and patterns in Amazon.co.uk owner feedback. See How we research.

Do you get commission?

Yes. If you buy through the links on this page, Amazon may pay a small commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn't affect which products are included. See the affiliate disclosure.
