How we chose: I compared popular detail sanders on Amazon.co.uk, checking each listing on 28 October 2026 (with a UK delivery postcode) for an add-to-basket button, the seller, the model number, dust collection and what's in the box. Speeds and weights are the makers' figures from the listings; where a listing gave conflicting power figures, I've left power out. I read recurring themes in Amazon.co.uk owner feedback and used HSE and UK Health Security Agency guidance on wood dust and old lead paint. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.

A detail sander has a small, pointed (iron- or triangle-shaped) pad that reaches right into corners, along window glazing bars and into furniture mouldings where a larger orbital sander won't fit. It's the tool for upcycling a chest of drawers, prepping a door or window frame for painting, smoothing filler, or taking the shine off old gloss before you repaint.

They're small, light and cheap, which makes them a good first sander. For big flat areas like a tabletop or floor, a larger orbital or random orbit sander is much quicker, but for most home decorating a detail sander does the job.

Who this guide is for: Anyone upcycling furniture or decorating: sanding skirting, doors, window frames, banisters and shelves before painting. Bosch microfilter box

The PSM 200 AES comes with two sanding plates: an iron-shaped one for corners and edges and a rectangular one for medium flat areas like a door panel or drawer front. They swap quickly with Bosch's SDS system. Electronic speed preselection lets you go slower on soft wood and paint, and the microfilter box catches fine dust. It comes in a plastic case with two sample sanding sheets.

Owners say it's excellent on all surfaces and makes light work of preparing wood for painting, and they like how light it is. Sanding sheets are a Bosch hook-and-loop fit, widely sold in UK DIY shops. It's sold and shipped by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Two pads for corners and flat areas
  • Speed control
  • Good dust box
  • Case included

Watch-outs

  • Pricier than the Mouse sanders
  • Only two sample sheets in the box

Weight (maker)
About 0.9kg

The original Mouse sander has been around since 1998 and is one of the best-selling power tools in the UK. It has a 55W motor, 11,000rpm, rubber grips and a teardrop-shaped base that gets into corners, with quick-fit hook-and-loop sheets (six included). The shape is designed to sit under your palm like a computer mouse, which gives good control on small pieces.

With over 15,000 reviews, owners say it's light, easy to use and effective for small jobs, including on MDF. It's less powerful than the 200W sanders here, so expect it to take longer on thick old paint. It's sold and shipped by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Very low price
  • Light and easy to control
  • Mouse sheets sold everywhere

Watch-outs

  • Low power for thick paint
  • Basic dust collection

Weight (maker)
About 1kg

The newer Mouse adds three rubber grip areas, a micro-filtration dust canister and a dust-sealed slide switch, and comes in a kit box with nine accessories, including a finger attachment for getting into chair spindles and mouldings. BLACK+DECKER says its mesh sanding sheets last four times longer than standard paper.

Owners call it a brilliant piece of kit that's comfortable to hold. Dust collection gets mixed feedback: some say it works well, others find it ineffective, so wear a mask either way. The listing gives two different power figures, so I haven't quoted one. It's sold and shipped by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Finger attachment for spindles
  • Kit box with accessories
  • Long-life mesh sheets

Watch-outs

  • Mixed views on dust collection
  • Costs more than the basic Mouse

It's designed with the battery balanced behind the pad for comfortable one-handed sanding, has a microfilter dust box and hook-and-loop sheets, and suits hard and soft wood, painted surfaces, edges and corners. Three sheets are included.

Owners praise its quality and battery life, and like that it uses the same battery as their other Bosch tools. It's handy for sanding a garden bench, a shed door or a banister with no cable to trip over. It's sold by Amazon and is body only.

Extraction adapter (36mm) for a vacuum
Weight (maker)
About 0.8kg

Einhell's delta sander has a 200W motor, a 2mm oscillating circuit and variable speed from 12,000 to 22,000 oscillations a minute. The triangular pad turns to three positions, so you can use all three points evenly before changing the paper. It comes with a dust extraction adapter for a vacuum and nine sheets in four grits.

Owners rate the quality, but reliability feedback is mixed, with at least one owner saying it stopped working after a few months. There's no dust box, so you'll want it connected to a vacuum indoors. It's sold and shipped by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Rotating pad wears evenly
  • Variable speed
  • Good grit selection included

Watch-outs

  • No built-in dust box
  • Mixed reliability reports

About 1.1kg

HYCHIKA's detail sander has a 200W motor at 14,000rpm, a six-hole dust collection system with a removable box, a soft-grip handle for one-handed use and hook-and-loop sheets. It comes with 12 sheets in P80, P120 and P240 grits, so you can go from rough to smooth straight away.

Owners call it a brilliant tool for furniture and smaller DIY projects, easy to use and worth the price. It's a lesser-known brand with a shorter track record than Bosch or BLACK+DECKER. It's sold and shipped by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • More power than the basic Mouse
  • 12 sheets included
  • Low price

Watch-outs

  • Lesser-known brand
  • Heavier than the Mouse

  • Mouse sanders (BLACK+DECKER) have a teardrop pad and sit under your palm: great control on furniture and small pieces.
  • Delta sanders have a triangular pad for getting into right-angled corners, and some pads rotate as they wear.
  • Multi-sanders like the Bosch PSM 200 AES add a larger rectangular pad for medium flat areas.
For whole doors, tabletops or floors, a bigger orbital or random orbit sander is faster.

Start coarse and work finer. P60–P80 removes old paint, varnish and rough patches. P120 smooths and prepares bare wood. P180–P240 is for a fine finish and for keying (scuffing) old gloss before repainting. Don't skip more than one step, or the scratches from the coarse paper will show through.

Wood dust can cause asthma and irritate your eyes, nose and throat, and the HSE says hardwood dust can cause a rare nasal cancer. Wear at least an FFP2 mask (FFP3 is better), use the dust box or connect a vacuum, keep the room ventilated, and clean up with a vacuum rather than a brush. Old paint is the bigger risk. The HSE says lead pigments were widely used in household paint until the 1960s and weren't removed from all common paints until the early 1980s, so older homes may have lead paint under newer layers. HSE and GOV.UK advise against dry sanding old paint: if it's sound, key it with wet abrasive paper instead; if it's flaking, use a chemical stripper and wet abrasive paper, and keep children and pregnant women away from the work. DIY test kits can help but aren't always accurate, so if in doubt, treat it as lead paint.

Hook-and-loop sheets are quick to change but wear out. Check which shape your sander takes before you buy refills: BLACK+DECKER Mouse, Bosch and generic delta sheets aren't always interchangeable. Multi-packs with mixed grits are the best value.

FAQs

What is a detail sander used for?

Sanding corners, edges, mouldings, window frames, skirting and small furniture, where a bigger sander won't reach. It's ideal for upcycling and prepping woodwork for painting.

Is the BLACK+DECKER Mouse good enough?

For light jobs and furniture, yes. It's light, cheap and easy to control. For thick old paint or lots of sanding, a more powerful model like the Bosch PSM 200 AES, Einhell or HYCHIKA will be quicker.

Can I sand old paint with a detail sander?

Only if you're confident it doesn't contain lead. The HSE says lead paint was common in homes until the 1960s and wasn't fully phased out until the early 1980s, and it advises against dry sanding old paint. Use wet abrasive paper or a chemical stripper on paint that might contain lead.

Corded or cordless detail sander?

Corded sanders are cheaper and never run out. Cordless ones (Bosch EasySander, Ryobi) are handier outside or up a ladder, and make sense if you already own batteries from that brand.

Have you tested these sanders?

No. This is a research-based roundup using the makers' specs and patterns in Amazon.co.uk owner feedback. See How we research.

Do you get commission?

Yes. If you buy through the links on this page, Amazon may pay a small commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn't affect which products are included. See the affiliate disclosure.
