Refurbished iPhones and Samsung phones as gifts: grades, warranties and what to check
A refurbished phone can cost far less than a new one and still make a lovely present, especially as a first phone for a teenager. This guide explains eBay's refurbished grades, the guarantee and returns, which iPhone and Samsung models still have years of security updates left, and the checks to do before you wrap it.

How we chose: I based this guide on eBay's own Refurbished pages (the buyer hub and the UK seller programme rules), Apple's UK security update statements for each iPhone, Samsung's security update lists, Which?'s refurbished phone guide (August 2026) and Apple's advice on buying a pre-owned iPhone, all opened on 28 October 2026. I chose models that should still get security updates for at least another year. I don't show prices, because refurbished prices change daily with stock and grade; the buttons open eBay searches limited to eBay's four Refurbished grades. I haven't bought or used any of these phones from these sellers. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.
Ad This guide contains affiliate links. Phones are one of the most-wanted Christmas presents, and one of the most expensive. Buying refurbished can save a lot: Which? says to expect to save between 20% and 50% compared with a new model. The trade-off is that you need to know what you're getting, because 'refurbished' can mean anything from as-new to visibly scratched.
eBay is a good place to start because its Refurbished programme has fixed rules for sellers: every phone must be fully working and come with at least a 12-month seller guarantee, free tracked delivery and at least 30 days for returns. Below: six iPhone and Samsung models worth buying refurbished, then what the grades mean, guarantees and returns, security updates and what to check when it arrives.
Buying for a teenager? Our gifts for teenagers guide has accessories and other ideas, and our wireless earbuds guide pairs well with a new phone. For smaller presents, see stocking fillers for adults and Secret Santa gifts under £20.
Who this guide is for: Parents buying a first phone for a teenager, anyone replacing a partner's or parent's old phone without paying new prices, and anyone who'd like a phone that's better for the planet. If the person needs the very latest camera or wants a phone that will get updates for seven or more years, a new phone may suit them better.
Black Friday tip: Refurbished phones are often discounted around Black Friday, but the model matters more than the deal: a cheap phone that's about to lose security updates is poor value. Check the update dates in this guide first. More ideas are in our Christmas gift guide hub.

Refurbished phones worth buying as a gift
Apple iPhone 15 (refurbished)
Best for: A phone that should keep getting updates for years
- First on sale (UK)
- September 2023
- Security updates
- At least until September 2028 (Apple)
- Look for
- 128GB or more, unlocked
The iPhone 15 brought USB-C charging to the standard iPhone, so it uses the same cable as most other gadgets, plus the Dynamic Island and a 48MP main camera. Apple's UK security statement promises updates for at least five years from when it first went on sale on 22 September 2023, so until at least September 2028.
It's the newest model here that's widely available refurbished at a much lower price than new. Choose 128GB or more and make sure the listing says unlocked.
What owners and reviewers like
- USB-C charging
- Security updates until at least September 2028
- Lots of refurbished stock
Watch-outs
- Costs more than an iPhone 14
- Check battery health on arrival

Apple iPhone 14 (refurbished)
Best for: Saving money while still getting a recent iPhone
- First on sale (UK)
- September 2022
- Security updates
- At least until September 2027 (Apple)
- Look for
- 128GB, unlocked
The iPhone 14 looks almost the same as the 15 but uses Apple's older Lightning charging port and has a notch rather than the Dynamic Island. Apple's UK statement promises security updates until at least September 2027, and Apple has often supported iPhones for longer than its minimum.
It's usually cheaper than the 15 in the same grade. It's a sensible first iPhone for a teenager, but if you can stretch to the 15 you get USB-C and an extra year of guaranteed updates.
What owners and reviewers like
- Usually cheaper than the iPhone 15
- Security updates until at least September 2027
- Familiar iPhone design
Watch-outs
- Lightning cable, not USB-C
- One year less of guaranteed updates than the 15

Samsung Galaxy S24 (refurbished)
Best for: Android fans who want the most years of updates
- First on sale (UK)
- January 2024
- Security updates
- Monthly updates; Samsung offers up to 7 years on recent flagships
- Look for
- 128GB or more, unlocked
A compact flagship with a bright screen, good cameras and Galaxy AI features. The S24 series launched in January 2024, when Samsung extended security support on its flagships to up to seven years, and Samsung's security page lists it for monthly updates.
That makes it the refurbished Samsung most likely to stay supported for the longest. Check whether a listing is the S24, S24+ or S24 Ultra: they're priced very differently.
What owners and reviewers like
- Long update support
- Compact size
- Monthly security updates
Watch-outs
- Check which S24 model the listing is
- Smaller battery than the S24+

Samsung Galaxy S23 (refurbished)
Best for: A flagship Samsung for less
- First on sale (UK)
- February 2023
- Security updates
- On Samsung's monthly update list (October 2026)
- Look for
- 128GB or more, unlocked
The S23 is a year older than the S24 but still a well-made compact flagship with a good camera. On 28 October 2026 Samsung's security page listed it for monthly updates.
It won't be supported for as long as the S24, so it suits someone who'll upgrade again in two or three years. Avoid the older S21, which Which? says has lost security support.
What owners and reviewers like
- Usually cheaper than the S24
- Still on monthly security updates
- Compact flagship
Watch-outs
- Shorter remaining support than the S24

Samsung Galaxy A55 5G (refurbished)
Best for: A first phone for a teenager, or a simple everyday phone
- First on sale (UK)
- March 2024
- Security updates
- On Samsung's monthly update list (October 2026)
- Look for
- 128GB or more, unlocked
A mid-range Samsung with a large screen, a metal frame and good battery life. It went on sale in March 2024 and Samsung's security page lists it for monthly updates, which is unusual for a phone at this price.
Refurbished, it's one of the cheapest ways to get a modern Samsung with years of updates ahead, which makes it a good first phone.
What owners and reviewers like
- Good value
- Monthly security updates
- Big screen and battery
Watch-outs
- Slower than the S-series
- Larger than the S23 and S24

Samsung Galaxy A35 5G (refurbished)
Best for: The tightest budgets
- First on sale (UK)
- March 2024
- Security updates
- On Samsung's quarterly update list (October 2026)
- Look for
- 128GB, unlocked
The A35 is the A55's cheaper sibling, launched at the same time. Samsung's security page lists it for quarterly rather than monthly updates, which is fine for most people but means fixes arrive less often.
If the price gap to an A55 is small in the grade you want, the A55 is the better buy.
What owners and reviewers like
- Lowest cost here
- Still getting security updates
- Large screen
Watch-outs
- Quarterly, not monthly, updates
- Plastic frame

On eBay, only sellers in the eBay Refurbished programme can use these four grades. eBay says all four are professionally inspected, cleaned and fully working; the difference is how they look and who refurbished them:
- Certified - Refurbished: pristine, like new, refurbished by the manufacturer or a manufacturer-approved company. The most expensive grade.
- Excellent - Refurbished: looks like new at first glance, with no to minimal signs of use, such as micro scratches on the body, and no visible screen scratches.
- Very Good - Refurbished: some signs of use, such as light scratches on the body.
- Good - Refurbished: moderate signs of use, such as small scratches or dents that don't affect how it works.
For a present, Excellent is usually the sweet spot: it should look new when unwrapped without the Certified price. Which?'s lab tests of graded phones found the middle grade (B, or 'good') gave the best balance of condition and price, but that the lowest grade could hide faults such as a faulty Face ID camera. If the phone will go straight into a case, Very Good can save a little more.
'Seller refurbished' and 'Used' listings are outside the programme. They can be cheaper, but they don't have to meet eBay's refurbished rules, so check the seller's own guarantee and returns carefully.
eBay's Refurbished programme rules say sellers must offer:
- At least a 12-month seller guarantee covering any faults in how the phone works. The seller sends the details by email or in the box: keep them, because claims go to the seller.
- Free tracked delivery to mainland UK addresses.
- At least 30 days for returns, and free returns on Certified phones.
On top of that, the eBay Money Back Guarantee covers you if the phone doesn't arrive or isn't as described, as long as you pay through eBay's checkout. Refurbished sellers are businesses, so you also have your normal consumer rights.
Buying for Christmas? A 30-day return window that starts in November can run out before Christmas Day. Either buy in December, or open the box, switch the phone on and do the checks below as soon as it arrives, then wrap it. Keep all the packaging until you're sure.
A phone that no longer gets security updates is riskier to use for banking and messages. Which? says iPhones tend to get security updates for at least six years from launch, while Android phones vary from two to eight years. Since 2024, UK law has made manufacturers state a minimum support period.
- iPhone: Apple's UK security statements promise at least five years from the date each model first went on sale: until at least September 2027 for the iPhone 14 and September 2028 for the iPhone 15. Which? advises against the iPhone 11 and 12, which are near the end of support. The iPhone 13's five-year minimum ran out in September 2026, so I'd only buy one if it's much cheaper.
- Samsung: Samsung's security page lists which phones get monthly or quarterly updates. On 28 October 2026 the Galaxy S23, S24 and A55 were on the monthly list and the A35 on the quarterly list. Which? says the Galaxy S21 has lost support, so avoid it.
If you're looking at a model not listed here, check its support dates before you buy.
Do these checks straight away, inside the return window:
- It isn't locked to someone else: on an iPhone, make sure you can set it up with your own Apple Account. Apple says not to accept an iPhone that asks for the previous owner's Apple Account or shows a lock screen (see Apple: buying a pre-owned iPhone). On a Samsung, make sure it doesn't ask for the previous owner's Google account after a reset.
- Unlocked to any network: put in the SIM it will be used with and make a call.
- Battery health: on an iPhone, go to Settings, Battery, Battery Health. Many sellers state a minimum battery health in the listing, so check it matches.
- Cameras, Face ID or fingerprint, speakers, microphone, buttons and charging port: Which? lists these as the parts most likely to have problems.
- The IMEI number: dial *#06# and check it matches the box or invoice. A CheckMEND check (a small fee) shows whether a phone has been reported lost or stolen.
- The charger and cable: refurbished phones often come with just a cable, and Which? found some came with chargers slower than the phone could use.
Found a problem? Contact the seller through eBay with photos, and use the return or the Money Back Guarantee if they don't put it right.
- Add a new case and screen protector, so any marks from the grade don't matter and the phone feels new. See our gifts for teenagers guide for more ideas.
- Set it up first if it's for a younger teenager, including Screen Time on iPhone or Family Link on Android.
- Check the person's SIM size and network: most networks offer SIM-only deals, and eSIM works on both iPhones and recent Samsungs.

FAQs
Is it OK to give a refurbished phone as a present?
Yes. An Excellent or Certified refurbished phone should look like new, and eBay Refurbished phones come with a 12-month seller guarantee. Adding a new case makes it feel brand new.
What's the difference between Excellent, Very Good and Good refurbished?
Only appearance. All three are professionally refurbished and fully working on eBay. Excellent has no to minimal signs of use, Very Good has light scratches and Good has moderate wear such as small scratches or dents.
What warranty do refurbished phones on eBay have?
eBay Refurbished items come with at least a 12-month seller guarantee covering faults, plus at least 30 days for returns and the eBay Money Back Guarantee if you pay through eBay.
Which refurbished iPhone should I buy in 2026?
The iPhone 15 or iPhone 14. Apple promises security updates until at least September 2028 for the 15 and September 2027 for the 14. Avoid the iPhone 11 and 12, which are near the end of support.
How do I check a refurbished iPhone isn't stolen or locked?
Make sure you can set it up with your own Apple Account and it doesn't ask for anyone else's. Dial *#06# to see the IMEI, and a CheckMEND check will show whether it's been reported lost or stolen.
Do you get commission?
Yes. eBay links on this page are eBay Partner Network affiliate links, so I may earn a commission from eBay if you buy, at no extra cost to you. Links to Apple, Samsung, Which? and other sites are plain links that earn nothing. See the affiliate disclosure.
