How we chose: I looked at the four best-known UK experience gift companies (Virgin Experience Days, Red Letter Days, Buyagift and Into the Blue) on 28 October 2026, opened each category page linked below to check it works and lists that kind of experience, and read each company's terms for voucher validity, exchanges, extensions and refunds. I haven't bought or tried these experiences, and I don't show prices because they vary by venue and change often. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.
An experience can be a better present than another thing to find room for, especially for someone who says they don't want anything. But an experience voucher is only a good gift if it gets used. So this guide sorts the main types of experience by who they suit, links to the right section of each company's site, and explains the small print that decides whether a voucher ends up as a great day out or forgotten in a drawer.
The four companies here sell vouchers for experiences run by local operators: a racetrack, a spa hotel, a restaurant or a farm. Virgin Experience Days, Red Letter Days and Buyagift sell many of the same kinds of experience (Red Letter Days and Buyagift are both run by Moonpig.com Limited, so their ranges overlap), and Into the Blue is especially strong on driving and outdoor activities. It's worth comparing the same experience on two sites, as the venue, what's included and the price can differ.
Buying for someone specific? See our Christmas gifts for her, gifts for him, gifts for mum, gifts for a dad who wants nothing and gifts for teenagers. Every gift guide is in our Christmas gift guide, and our Black Friday deals hub explains how to tell a genuine deal.
Who this guide is for: Anyone buying for a person who has everything, a couple, a parent who'd rather have a day out than another gadget, or a teenager who wants to drive before they're old enough. It suits people you know well enough to judge whether they'd love a balloon flight or hate the 5am start. If you're not sure, pick a voucher that can be swapped for something else (see below).
Black Friday tip: Experience companies run Black Friday sales too: Buyagift, Red Letter Days and Into the Blue already had Black Friday pages up when I checked on 28 October 2026. Remember that most vouchers start their validity from the day you buy, so a voucher bought on Black Friday (27 November) for a Christmas present loses about a month of its time before it's even unwrapped. See the picks to watch in every category in our Black Friday deals hub.

Thrills and adventure
Experiences with a bit of adrenaline: on the track, in the air or up in the trees.
Driving experiences: supercars, karting, junior driving and track days
Best for: Car fans of any age, including under-17s who can't drive on the road yet
- Type
- Driving
- Good for
- Petrolheads, birthdays, teenagers
- Where to look
- Virgin Experience Days, Red Letter Days, Buyagift, Into the Blue
The classic experience gift: a few laps of a track in a supercar such as a Ferrari, Lamborghini or Aston Martin, or something different like drifting, off-road 4x4s, tanks or karting. All four companies had dedicated driving sections when I checked, and each has junior or young driver options for under-17s, which make a memorable present for a teenager.
Read what's actually included before you buy. A 'triple' drive usually means three cars, but the number of laps or miles, whether there's a passenger ride and whether spectators are welcome all vary by venue. Check the nearest track too: venues are spread around the UK, so the same voucher can mean a short drive for one person and a long trip for another.
Why it works as a gift
- Huge choice, from karting to supercars
- Junior options for under-17s
- Easy to match to a car they love
Watch-outs
- Laps or miles can be few: check what's included
- Venues and dates vary: check the nearest track

Hot air balloon flights for one or two
Best for: Someone with a bucket list, or a couple's special occasion
- Type
- Balloon flight
- Good for
- Big birthdays, anniversaries
- Where to look
- Virgin Experience Days, Red Letter Days, Buyagift
A balloon flight over the British countryside is one of the most memorable experience gifts. Virgin Experience Days sells Virgin Balloon Flights vouchers, including anytime and weekday sunrise flights with prosecco, and Red Letter Days and Buyagift both have balloon sections too.
Flights depend on the weather, so they're often rescheduled, sometimes more than once. That's normal, but it means a voucher with a long validity, or an 'anytime' option rather than weekday-only, takes the pressure off. Flights usually mean an early start or an evening slot, and there may be weight, age and fitness limits, so check those before you buy for someone.
Why it works as a gift
- Genuinely once-in-a-lifetime for most people
- Options for one or two
- Sunrise and evening flights
Watch-outs
- Weather cancellations are common
- Check weight, age and fitness limits

Zip lines, treetop adventures and outdoor activities
Best for: Active people, families with older children and groups of friends
- Type
- Adventure
- Good for
- Thrill-seekers, families, groups
- Where to look
- Red Letter Days, Buyagift, Into the Blue, Virgin Experience Days
Zip wires, high ropes and treetop courses suit people who'd rather be outdoors than sat in a spa. Go Ape treetop adventures were listed on Red Letter Days, Buyagift and Virgin Experience Days when I checked, and Into the Blue has a Zip World section alongside its high ropes and zip lining page. Their adventure sections also cover things like climbing, kayaking, axe throwing and indoor skydiving.
Most of these have minimum ages, heights and weight limits, and some close or run reduced hours in winter. If you're buying for a family, check each child meets the limits and whether an adult must take part too.
Why it works as a gift
- Lots of choice beyond zip lines
- Good for groups and families
- Works for people who don't want 'pampering'
Watch-outs
- Age, height and weight limits
- Some sites have winter closures

Pampering, food and drink
Slower, gentler experiences: a day at the spa, afternoon tea, a meal out.
Spa days, for one or for two
Best for: Someone who needs a proper rest, or a mum, sister or friend
- Type
- Spa day
- Good for
- Mums, partners, friends
- Where to look
- Red Letter Days, Virgin Experience Days, Buyagift, Into the Blue
A spa day is the most popular kind of experience gift for good reason: almost everyone enjoys one and there's usually a venue within reach. Bannatyne spa days were listed on all four sites when I checked, with or without treatments and lunch, and each site has spa days for one or two plus overnight spa breaks.
Compare what's included: how long you can use the facilities, which treatment (and for how long), whether lunch or afternoon tea is included and whether it's weekday only. A 'for two' voucher is a lovely present for a couple, or for a mum to take a friend.
Why it works as a gift
- Venues all over the UK
- Options for one or two
- Easy to choose for most people
Watch-outs
- Weekday-only vouchers are common
- Treatments and inclusions vary a lot

Afternoon tea for two
Best for: Parents, grandparents and anyone who'd love a treat in nice surroundings
- Type
- Afternoon tea
- Good for
- Mums, grandparents, friends
- Where to look
- Virgin Experience Days, Red Letter Days, Buyagift
Afternoon tea vouchers range from a local hotel to famous London venues: Virgin Experience Days listed afternoon tea at Fortnum & Mason and Harrods when I checked, and all three sites have London, luxury and 'for two' sections. Some add a twist, such as a bus tour or a steam train ride with tea.
It's one of the easiest experiences to use, as it only takes an afternoon and there are venues in most areas. Check whether the voucher includes a glass of fizz, whether it's valid at weekends and whether there's a dress code at the grander venues.
Why it works as a gift
- Easy to fit into a day
- Venues in most areas
- Suits almost any age
Watch-outs
- Weekend use sometimes costs extra or isn't included
- Famous venues book up early

Dining experiences and restaurant vouchers
Best for: Couples and food lovers who enjoy a night out
- Type
- Dining
- Good for
- Couples, foodies, parents
- Where to look
- Red Letter Days, Virgin Experience Days, Buyagift, Into the Blue
Dining vouchers cover everything from a three-course meal for two at a named restaurant to themed dining shows (Faulty Towers The Dining Experience was on Red Letter Days and Into the Blue when I checked) and dining trips on steam trains or river cruises. Red Letter Days also had restaurant brand pages such as Gordon Ramsay and Gaucho.
With a named restaurant, check it's somewhere the person can actually get to and that it's open on days they're free. Read exactly what's included (number of courses, drinks, set menu or à la carte), as that's where similar-looking vouchers differ most.
Why it works as a gift
- Plenty of options for couples
- Themed and entertainment dining
- Restaurant brand pages
Watch-outs
- Venue is fixed: check the location
- Set menus and drinks rules vary

Animals, learning, couples and smaller budgets
Experiences for animal lovers, keen cooks, couples, and ideas for smaller budgets.
Animal encounters: zoos, birds of prey, alpaca walks and more
Best for: Animal lovers of any age, and families
- Type
- Animal experience
- Good for
- Animal lovers, children, families
- Where to look
- Virgin Experience Days, Red Letter Days, Buyagift, Into the Blue
Animal experiences include zookeeper and safari park days, meet-the-animal sessions, falconry and birds of prey, aquarium visits and animal walks. Red Letter Days had a Port Lympne Reserve section when I checked, and Buyagift and Red Letter Days both list animal walking experiences.
These are often the experiences with the strictest rules: minimum ages, a limit on how many people can join and seasonal dates. If it's for a child, check the minimum age and whether an adult needs a separate ticket.
Why it works as a gift
- Great for children and animal lovers
- Wide range of animals and venues
- Many are half-day sessions
Watch-outs
- Minimum ages are common
- Some are seasonal or weekday-only

Cookery classes and courses
Best for: Keen home cooks and people who'd like to learn something new
- Type
- Cookery class
- Good for
- Cooks, couples, friends
- Where to look
- Virgin Experience Days, Red Letter Days, Buyagift, Into the Blue
A cookery class is a present that keeps giving after the day itself. Virgin Experience Days had a Jamie Oliver cookery courses section when I checked, and Red Letter Days listed a Pasta Evangelists class for two. All four sites have cookery sections covering cuisines and skills from sushi and Thai cooking to bread-making.
Classes run on set dates at a fixed school, so check the location and how far ahead dates are released. If you're buying for a keen cook who already has the basics, look for a specific cuisine or skill rather than a general beginners' class. For kit to go with it, see our gifts for cooks.
Why it works as a gift
- Teaches a skill they'll keep
- Good for couples or friends
- Lots of cuisines to choose from
Watch-outs
- Fixed dates and locations
- Check the level suits them

Experiences for couples: days and nights out for two
Best for: Anniversaries, weddings and joint presents for a couple
- Type
- For two
- Good for
- Anniversaries, couples, parents
- Where to look
- Red Letter Days, Virgin Experience Days, Buyagift
Most of the experiences above come in a 'for two' version, and each site gathers them in a couples section: spa days, afternoon tea, dining, balloon flights and things like a couples photoshoot (listed on Virgin Experience Days when I checked).
A shared experience works well as a joint present for parents or a couple who have everything. Check that both people can make the same date, and if one of them isn't keen on heights, mud or early starts, choose something you know they'll both enjoy.
Why it works as a gift
- Ideal for anniversaries and weddings
- Most experience types come for two
- A present they share
Watch-outs
- Both people need the same free date
- Pick something both will enjoy

Experience gifts under £50
Best for: A smaller present, Secret Santa with a higher limit, or a stocking extra
- Type
- Under £50
- Good for
- Smaller budgets, add-ons
- Where to look
- Virgin Experience Days, Red Letter Days, Into the Blue, Buyagift
An experience doesn't have to be expensive. Each company has a section of experiences under £50, and when I checked those pages included afternoon teas, spa treatments, gin, beer and wine tastings, animal encounters and karting. I haven't listed individual prices because they change and vary by venue.
Lower-priced vouchers often have more restrictions (weekdays only, one person, set dates), so read the small print. If you're not sure what they'd like, a money gift card from the same company lets them choose; for a small physical present instead, see our Secret Santa gifts under £20.
Why it works as a gift
- Easy way into experience gifts
- Lots of variety
- Good as a joint gift from colleagues
Watch-outs
- More restrictions at lower prices
- Usually for one person

When you buy an experience voucher, you pay the gift company now and the person books a date directly with the venue later, using the voucher. All four offer an e-voucher sent by email straight away, which is handy for last-minute presents; some also post a printed voucher (check the delivery options and cost).
- Validity. Virgin Experience Days says most experiences are valid for 12 months from purchase. Red Letter Days and Buyagift vouchers are valid for 12 months from the confirmation email. Into the Blue vouchers are valid for 14 months, unless stated otherwise. The experience has to be booked and taken before the expiry date.
- Swapping it for something else. All four let the recipient exchange a voucher for a different experience while it's still valid. If the new one costs more, you pay the difference; if it costs less, the difference is usually kept as credit rather than refunded.
- Extensions. If time runs out, you can usually pay to extend: Virgin Experience Days charges £20 for up to 12 more months (within 4 weeks of expiry); Red Letter Days and Buyagift charge £20 per extension (12 months each, up to twice, requested before expiry); Into the Blue charges £10 for vouchers under £100 and £20 above that, if you contact it before expiry. You may also have to pay any increase in the experience's price.
- Refunds. Virgin Experience Days, Red Letter Days and Buyagift offer refunds on unused vouchers bought directly from them within 30 days of purchase. After a date is booked, the venue's own terms apply. Vouchers bought through another retailer follow that retailer's refund policy.
These were the terms on each company's site on 28 October 2026. They can change, and some vouchers have shorter validity or can't be extended, so check the product page before you pay.
- Check where it's available. Search the experience with the recipient's postcode or town. A voucher listing 'over 50 locations' is no use if the nearest is three hours away.
- Check when it's available. Look for weekday-only, seasonal or 'selected dates' wording, especially for balloon flights, outdoor activities and anything for a working person who can only go at weekends.
- Book early. Popular venues and weekend dates fill up months ahead, and weather-dependent experiences may need rebooking. Encourage the person to book soon after Christmas rather than near the expiry date.
- Check who it's for. Minimum ages, height and weight limits, health restrictions and whether spectators are allowed vary by experience. If in doubt, choose a voucher that can be swapped, or a money gift card.
Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026 and Cyber Monday is 30 November. Experience companies join in: Buyagift, Red Letter Days and Into the Blue already had Black Friday pages up on 28 October 2026. As with any deal, compare the price with the same experience on another site and check what's included, rather than trusting a crossed-out price. Our Black Friday deals hub explains how to check a deal.
Because most vouchers start counting from the day you buy (or from the confirmation email), buying early for Christmas uses up some of the validity. It's usually a small trade-off, but for weather-dependent experiences such as balloon flights, a longer validity or a cheap extension is worth more than a small discount. E-vouchers arrive by email straight away, so an experience can still be a last-minute present on Christmas Eve.
We use MailerLite to send emails. See our privacy policy.
FAQs
What is the best experience gift?
It depends on the person: a spa day or afternoon tea suits most people and is easy to use, a driving experience or balloon flight makes a bigger impression for the right person, and a cookery class suits keen cooks. If you're unsure, choose a voucher that can be exchanged for a different experience.
How long do experience vouchers last?
Virgin Experience Days says most are valid for 12 months from purchase; Red Letter Days and Buyagift vouchers are valid for 12 months from the confirmation email; Into the Blue vouchers are valid for 14 months unless stated otherwise (all checked 28 October 2026). The experience must be taken before the voucher expires, but you can usually pay to extend it.
Can you exchange an experience voucher?
Yes, with all four companies in this guide, as long as the voucher is still valid. If the new experience costs more you pay the difference; if it costs less, the difference is normally held as credit.
Are Red Letter Days and Buyagift the same company?
Both sites' terms say they are trading names of Moonpig.com Limited, part of the Moonpig Group. Their ranges overlap a lot, so compare the same experience on both.
Should I buy an experience gift on Black Friday?
It can be a good time to buy, as the big experience companies run Black Friday sales. Compare the same experience on two sites, check what's included, and remember the validity usually starts from the day you buy.
Have you tried these experiences?
No. This is a research-based guide: I checked each company's category pages and terms on 28 October 2026. I haven't bought, booked or tried the experiences. See how we research.
Do you earn from these links?
Not at the moment. I've applied to the Virgin Experience Days and Red Letter Days affiliate programmes; if they approve, those links may become affiliate links that pay me a small commission at no extra cost to you. The Buyagift and Into the Blue links aren't affiliate links. It doesn't affect what's included. See the affiliate disclosure.
Prices change constantly, so we don’t list them here. Always check the current price, seller and delivery details on the retailer’s site before buying. If anything on this page looks wrong or out of date, let me know.
