Gifts for a dad who wants nothing: 6 ideas he'll actually appreciate

"I don't need anything" is the hardest Christmas list there is. The answer is usually something he'll use up, something that gives him time to himself, or an upgrade to a thing he does already. Here are six ideas on Amazon.co.uk that won't end up in the loft.

How we chose: We picked well-reviewed gifts on Amazon.co.uk that suit dads who already own what they need, favouring consumables, experiences and upgrades to everyday routines over novelty items. We checked each listing's contents, specifications and seller, and looked for recurring themes in Amazon.co.uk owner feedback. We left out popular "gifts for dad" items where owners frequently reported poor quality. Prices change constantly before Christmas, so check the current price on Amazon. We have not personally tested these products; this is a research-based roundup. Our research process.

When a dad says he wants nothing, he usually means he doesn't want more stuff. So skip the gadget he'll never charge and the novelty mug, and think about three kinds of gift instead: something he'll eat, drink or use up; something that gives him time, memories or a new hobby; and a quality upgrade to something he already does, like cooking the Sunday roast or washing the car.

We've grouped six ideas that way. Each one is useful from day one and doesn't need him to change his habits. If you'd rather choose by budget, our Christmas gifts for him under £50 has more ideas, and our stocking fillers guide has smaller extras. Buying for both parents? Our gifts for mum has ideas for her too.

Who this guide is for: Anyone buying for a father, stepdad or grandad who insists he doesn't need anything, especially practical, older dads who already have the tools and gadgets. These also work for birthdays and Father's Day. If he cooks, see our gifts for cooks; if he has a dog, try our gifts for dog lovers.

Black Friday tip: Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026, so it’s a chance to buy presents early. Check the price history before you buy, and the returns window if it’s a gift: our Black Friday home buying guide explains how.

Things he'll use up

The safest bet for a dad with everything: gifts that get eaten or used, so they never become clutter.

1

Snowdonia Cheese Company cheese, chutney and cracker gift box

Type
Food gift box

Gift note
Delivered chilled

Four waxed 200g truckles from Snowdonia Cheese Company, Black Bomber extra mature Cheddar, Red Devil Red Leicester with habanero chillies, Red Storm vintage Red Leicester and Rock Star cave-aged Cheddar, plus two chutneys and a pack of wholemeal and olive oil crackers. It's sent by the cheesemaker using chilled delivery in insulated packaging, so it's sold by a third-party seller rather than Amazon.

Owners say it's excellent quality, with a great selection, looks beautiful and is well received. Plan delivery for when someone's home, put it straight in the fridge and check the best-before dates. It contains milk, and the crackers contain gluten, so check the allergen information if needed.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Gets eaten, not stored
  • Award-winning Welsh cheeses
  • Beautifully presented

Watch-outs

  • Chilled delivery needs someone home
  • Third-party seller

For the outside, the Autoglym Luxury Bodywork & Wheels Collection has a car wash, ceramic spray, wheel cleaner, tyre dressing, glass cleaner and finishing cloth.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Something he'll use up
  • Trusted brand
  • Sold by Amazon

Watch-outs

  • Not for leather seats (shampoo is for fabric)
  • Only useful if he has a car

Memories and time to himself

Gifts that give him time, a hobby or a way to share his stories, rather than more things to store.

3
Most meaningful gift

Good for
Family history
Gift note
Becomes a keepsake

A guided journal of prompts and questions about his childhood, family, work and life lessons, with space to write his answers. Once filled in, it becomes a keepsake for the family. It's sold by Amazon.

Owners say the questions are thought-provoking and well balanced, there's plenty of space to write, and it helps pass on family history. Some feel it's overpriced for what it is. It works best when someone sits with him to talk through the questions, which is a gift in itself.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Personal and meaningful
  • Creates a family keepsake

  • Only works if he'll fill it in

Best tool for the dad with every tool

Leatherman Rev 14-in-1 multi-tool, stainless steel

Best for: DIY, the garden shed and camping

Type
Multi-tool
Good for
DIY, camping, odd jobs
Gift note
Adults only: contains a knife

A compact 14-in-1 multi-tool from Leatherman with pliers, wire cutters, screwdrivers and a 420HC stainless-steel knife blade. It's a good quality alternative to the cheap multi-tools that end up in kitchen drawers, and handy for odd jobs, camping and the shed. It's sold by a third-party seller.

Owners say the knife is very sharp out of the box, it's portable and good value, and the tool selection covers everything they need. Build quality and the blade lock get mixed comments. It's sold as an adult item. GOV.UK says it's illegal to sell most knives to under-18s or carry them in public without a good reason; the only exception is a folding pocketknife with a cutting edge of 3 inches or less that isn't a lock knife. Owners mention a blade lock, so treat it as a toolbox tool rather than one to carry.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Quality brand
  • 14 tools in a pocket-sized body
  • Sharp, stainless blade

Watch-outs

  • Knife carrying rules apply
  • Third-party seller

How to buy for a dad who wants nothing

Avoid gifts that need effort to start using, such as new tech that needs an account, unless you'll set it up for him on Christmas Day.

Knives, food and other things to check

GOV.UK says it's illegal to sell most knives to anyone under 18 and to carry them in public without a good reason, such as work. The only exception is a folding pocketknife with a cutting edge of 3 inches or less that isn't a lock knife. Multi-tools with a locking blade follow the same rules, so they're best kept in a toolbox or shed.

For food gifts, check allergies and dietary needs, and plan chilled deliveries for a day when someone is home. The Food Standards Agency has advice on food allergies and intolerances, and the cheese box contains milk.

Delivery and returns

Order by early December if you can, especially for items sent by third-party sellers or with chilled delivery. Citizens Advice notes that the 14-day cooling-off period for online purchases doesn't apply to food that goes off quickly, so be sure about the cheese box before you order. For bigger purchases, our Black Friday buying guide explains how to check whether a deal is genuine.

FAQs

What do you buy a dad who wants nothing?

Something he'll use up (a cheese box or car care kit), something that gives him time or memories (a Kindle or life-story journal) or an upgrade to something he already does (a MEATER thermometer or Leatherman multi-tool).

What's a meaningful gift for an older dad?

A guided journal like Tell Me Your Life Story, Dad, a photo book, or time together. Sitting with him to fill in the journal turns it into an experience as well as a keepsake.

Is a Leatherman a good gift for dad?

Yes, for practical dads, but it contains a knife. It's sold as an adult item, and UK law restricts carrying lock knives in public without a good reason, so it's best as a toolbox or camping tool.

Are food gifts a good idea for dads?

Usually, because they don't add clutter. Check for allergies and dietary needs, and for chilled items like cheese, choose a delivery date when someone's home.

When should I order Christmas gifts?

By early December if possible. Third-party sellers and chilled food deliveries often have longer or more specific delivery times than items sent by Amazon.

Do you get commission?

Yes. If you buy through our links, Amazon may pay us a small commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn't affect which products we include. See our Affiliate Disclosure.
