Best under-bed storage: fabric bags, plastic boxes and boxes on wheels

The gap under the bed is often the biggest empty space in a UK bedroom. The right boxes turn it into a home for spare duvets, winter jumpers and wrapping paper. Here are seven options on Amazon.co.uk, from zipped fabric bags to rigid plastic boxes on wheels, sorted by the height they need.

How we chose: I compared popular under-bed storage bags and boxes on Amazon.co.uk, checking each listing on 21 October 2026 (with a UK delivery postcode) for an add-to-cart button, the external dimensions (especially height), the capacity, the pack size and what it's made of. I read recurring themes in owner feedback, especially zips, lids, whether the box keeps its shape and whether it actually fits under a bed. Advice on airflow and damp draws on UK government and Energy Saving Trust guidance. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.

Before you look at anything, measure the gap between the floor and the underside of the bed frame or slats, at the lowest point. Many bed frames leave 20–30cm, but some divans and low frames leave less than 15cm. The single most common complaint in under-bed storage reviews is a box that's a centimetre too tall, so I've listed each pick's height in the table.

Then decide between soft and hard. Fabric bags are cheap, fold flat when empty and are breathable, which suits duvets, pillows and clothes. Rigid plastic boxes keep their shape, stack, keep out dust and pets, and are easier to slide in and out, especially with wheels. Clear boxes save you opening every one to find the Christmas wrapping.

The picks in detail

1
Best overall

Lifewit 95L under-bed storage bags with clear lid window, pack of 4

Best for: Duvets, pillows and seasonal clothes on a budget

Type
Fabric bag with zip lid
Size (L × W × H)
100 × 50 × 18–19cm
Capacity
95L each
Pack
4

Large, breathable non-woven fabric bags with a clear PVC window in the lid, so you can see what's inside, and reinforced handles on the front and sides so you can pull them out from any direction. Each bag is 100 × 50cm and about 18–19cm tall, and Lifewit says one holds around four thick blankets or 20 jumpers. They fold flat when you don't need them.

Owners like the strong zips and the capacity, with people fitting pillows and duvets in a single bag, and say they fit under ottoman beds too. A few feel they're not worth the price. At 1m long, check the width under your bed before ordering four.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Four large bags in a pack
  • See-through lid window
  • Breathable fabric for bedding

Watch-outs

  • Soft sides sag when half full
  • 1m long: check your bed width
  • Not dust-proof like a plastic box

A linen-look box with a stiff PP board in the base and sides, so it stands up on its own rather than flopping like a bag. The lid zips on three sides with two zip pulls, and there are three handles. It folds down to 40 × 18 × 10cm for storage. iwill lists a maximum load of 15kg.

Owners like the rigid sides and the look, with one fitting a king-size duvet. Check the pack size and colour on the listing before you buy, as there are several variations.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Keeps its shape
  • Opens on three sides
  • Neat linen look

Watch-outs

  • Check pack size on the listing
  • Lower capacity than big bags
  • Fabric marks more easily than plastic

3
Best for low beds

JUPELI 48L rigid under-bed storage boxes, 15cm high, pack of 2

Best for: Beds with only 15–17cm clearance

Type
Fabric box with rigid panels and split lid
Size (L × W × H)
79 × 40 × 15cm
Capacity
48L each
Pack
2

At 15cm tall, these are the lowest boxes here, for beds that won't take the usual 18–20cm. Rigid PP panels in the top, sides and base stop them sagging, and the lid is split so you can open one end without pulling the whole box out. They're made from a ramie-cotton fabric with a nylon lining.

Owners say they fit well under low beds and hold a good amount. Zip durability gets mixed comments.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Low 15cm height
  • Rigid panels hold their shape
  • Split lid for quick access

Watch-outs

  • Some zip complaints
  • Less capacity than taller boxes
  • Fabric isn't wipe-clean like plastic

4
Best clear box on wheels

Muddy Hands 32L clear under-bed storage boxes with lids and wheels, pack of 2

Best for: Shoes, toys and anything you want to see and roll out easily

Type
Clear plastic box, wheels, split clip lid
Size (L × W × H)
60 × 40 × 18.5cm
Capacity
32L each
Pack
2

Clear plastic boxes on wheels with a clip-down lid that flips open from either side, so you can reach in without sliding the box all the way out. They stack when you're not using them under the bed.

Owners like how easily they roll and the split lid. Opinions on how sturdy the plastic is are mixed, so don't overload them with books.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Wheels make them easy to pull out
  • See what's inside
  • Lid opens from either side

Watch-outs

  • Mixed views on sturdiness
  • 18.5cm height plus wheels: measure carefully
  • Smaller capacity

Best UK-made box

Strata 35L under-bed Smart plastic storage box with wheels

Type
Plastic box with lid and wheels
Size (L × W × H)
69 × 45 × 18cm
Capacity
35L

Strata is a long-established British maker of plastic storage, and this is its under-bed box with wheels and a lid. It's a straightforward 35-litre box that slides under most beds with 18cm or more clearance.

Owners like the room inside and how easily it moves. Some report poor build quality or a lid that doesn't sit well, so it's worth checking it as soon as it arrives.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Wheels
  • Wipe-clean plastic
  • British brand

Watch-outs

  • Single box, not a pack
  • Mixed reports on the lid
  • Check build quality on arrival

6
Best for wrapping paper

Really Useful Box 22L clear plastic storage box, pack of 2

Best for: Wrapping paper, documents and anything long and flat

Type
Clear rigid plastic box, lift-lock handles
Size (L × W × H)
80 × 25.5 × 15.5cm
Capacity
22L each
Pack
2

Really Useful Boxes are made in the UK, and their lift-lock handles clip the lid on firmly. This long, narrow 22L size (80 × 25.5 × 15.5cm) is a favourite for rolls of wrapping paper, and at 15.5cm tall it slides under low beds. They stack and are tough enough for kids' rooms.

Owners say they're sturdy, with one fitting 25–30 rolls of wrapping paper, and that the lids lock securely. They're narrow, so they hold less bulky bedding than the bags.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Made in the UK and very sturdy
  • Lid locks with the handles
  • Fits low beds

Watch-outs

  • Narrow: not for duvets
  • No wheels
  • Pricier per litre

7
Biggest on wheels

Kukikan 75L rolling under-bed storage bags with clear lid, pack of 2

Best for: Higher beds with 24cm or more clearance and lots of bedding to store

Type
Fabric box with PP panels, wheels, clear lid
Size (L × W × H)
72 × 42 × 24cm (20cm without wheels)
Capacity
75L each
Pack
2

Large fabric boxes with rigid PP panels, a clear dust-proof lid with label windows, a double zip and five wheels each. Kukikan says they need more than 24cm of clearance with the wheels fitted (20cm without). The wheels come off and the boxes fold flat when not in use.

Owners say they're spacious, sturdy and roll easily, and nicer-looking than plastic. This is a newer listing, so there are fewer long-term reviews.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Large capacity
  • Wheels and label windows
  • Fold flat when empty

Watch-outs

  • Needs 24cm clearance with wheels
  • Newer listing
  • Fabric not wipe-clean

Measuring your bed

Measure the height from the floor to the lowest part of the bed: the frame rail, the slats or a centre support bar. Measure the length and width too, including any centre legs, which often stop two long boxes sitting side by side. Allow a centimetre or two of clearance so boxes slide rather than scrape, and add the wheel height if a box has wheels.

Divan beds usually have little or no space underneath; look for divans with built-in drawers instead. Ottoman beds lift up, so stackable bags are useful inside them.

Airflow, damp and moths

A bed packed solid underneath can trap moisture, especially in a cold bedroom with condensation. UK government guidance on damp and mould notes that poor ventilation and cold surfaces encourage mould, and the Energy Saving Trust points out that mould can form where air can't circulate freely, such as behind furniture. Leave a little space around boxes, vacuum under the bed regularly, and keep humidity down with ventilation or a dehumidifier.

Fabric bags let bedding breathe; airtight plastic is better for anything that mustn't get dusty or chewed. Only pack clothes and bedding when they're clean and completely dry. Clothes moths go for wool and natural fibres that have been worn and stored without washing.

What to store under the bed

FAQs

How much space do you need for under-bed storage?

Most under-bed boxes are 15–20cm tall, and boxes on wheels can be 24cm or more. Measure from the floor to the lowest part of the frame or slats and allow a centimetre or two of clearance. For beds with less than 17cm, look at the JUPELI (15cm) or Really Useful Box (15.5cm).

Is it bad to store things under your bed?

Not if you keep the area clean and dry. Leave some space for air to move, vacuum regularly and keep bedroom humidity in check. In rooms with condensation, avoid packing the space solid, and use breathable bags for bedding.

Are fabric or plastic under-bed boxes better?

Fabric bags are cheaper, breathable and fold flat, which suits bedding and clothes. Plastic boxes are sturdier, stack, keep out dust and pets, and slide more easily. Many people use both: bags for duvets, boxes for shoes and wrapping paper.

Can I put a duvet in under-bed storage?

Yes. A 95L bag like the Lifewit can hold a duvet and pillows. Make sure the duvet is clean and fully dry first. Vacuum compression bags save more space but can flatten feather and down fillings if left for long periods; check the care label.

Do you get commission?

Yes. If you buy through the links on this page, Amazon may pay a small commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn't affect which products are included. See the affiliate disclosure.
