How we chose: I compared popular cross line and wall laser levels on Amazon.co.uk, checking each listing on 28 October 2026 (with a UK delivery postcode) for an add-to-basket button, the seller, the model number and what's included. Accuracy and range figures are the makers' own. I read the recurring themes in Amazon.co.uk owner feedback, especially beam visibility and self-levelling, and used UK government laser safety guidance for the safety notes. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.

A laser level projects a perfectly straight horizontal and vertical line onto the wall, so you can line up a row of picture frames, a shelf, a splashback or a TV bracket without balancing a spirit level and pencilling marks. Most DIY models are cross line lasers: they self-level using a small pendulum inside, then project a cross. That's all most homes need.

The big choice is green or red. Human eyes see green light much more easily, so a green beam stays visible further away and in brighter rooms. Red lasers are cheaper and use less battery, but owners regularly say red lines fade in daylight. If you'll mostly work in the evening or in small rooms, red is fine. For sunny rooms or bigger spaces, go green.

The picks in detail

1
Best overall

Bosch Quigo Green cross line laser with MM 2 universal clamp

Best for: Most DIY jobs, with a green beam that's easier to see in daylight

Beam
Green cross
Accuracy (maker)
±0.6mm/m
Range (maker)
Up to 12m
Mounting
MM 2 clamp and adapter plate

The Quigo Green is about the size of a large egg. It self-levels and projects a horizontal and vertical line at the same time, and you can tilt it for angled lines on stairs. Bosch quotes accuracy within ±0.6mm per metre and a working range of up to 12m, which is plenty for a living room or a long hallway. The MM 2 universal clamp grips a door edge, shelf or pole, and two AAA batteries are in the box.

Owner feedback is mixed. Many say it's ideal for DIY jobs and great for the price, while others found the beam faint in bright daylight or had trouble with the adjustment wheel. Like all small lasers, it's at its best indoors over a few metres. If you'd like a tripod rather than the clamp, Bosch also sells a Quigo Green tripod set.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Green beam is easier to see than red
  • Small enough for a kitchen drawer
  • Clamp fixes it almost anywhere
  • Batteries included

Watch-outs

  • Mixed reports on brightness in daylight
  • Some reports of the adjuster breaking
  • No tripod in this set

2
Best budget Bosch

Bosch Quigo cross line laser (red) with MM 2 universal clamp

Best for: Small rooms and evening jobs on a tighter budget

Beam
Red cross
Accuracy (maker)
±0.8mm/m
Range (maker)
Up to 7m
Mounting
MM 2 clamp and adapter plate

The standard Quigo works in the same way as the green version but with a red beam, a slightly lower quoted accuracy (±0.8mm per metre) and a shorter range of up to 7m. For hanging pictures, a shelf or a curtain pole in a normal UK room, that's enough. It comes with the same MM 2 clamp, an adapter plate and two AAA batteries.

Owners call it a good piece of kit and much easier than a spirit level for things like curtains. The most common complaint is the one you'd expect from a red laser: it's hard to see in a brightly lit room, so draw the curtains or work in the evening.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Cheaper than the green Quigo
  • Same clamp and simple one-button use
  • Fine for most rooms

Watch-outs

  • Red beam fades in bright light
  • Shorter range (7m)

3
Best for accuracy

Bosch UniversalLevel 2 (Gen 2) cross line laser with plumb points (0603663FZ0)

Best for: Kitchen fitting, tiling and anyone who wants plumb points as well as a cross

Beam
Red cross plus up and down plumb points
Accuracy (maker)
±0.5mm/m
Range (maker)
See listing
Mounting
1/4in tripod thread (tripod not included)

The UniversalLevel 2 adds two plumb points, one projected up to the ceiling and one down to the floor, so you can transfer a point straight up, for example to line up a ceiling light with a mark on the floor. Bosch quotes ±0.5mm per metre, the tightest figure among the DIY models here, and there's an incline mode for angled lines outside the self-levelling range. It comes with a soft bag and two AA batteries.

Owners describe it as reliable and say it does exactly what they expected. On 28 October Amazon had only a few left at the time we checked, so if it's out of stock, the Quigo Green is the closest alternative.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Tightest quoted accuracy here
  • Plumb points for ceiling-to-floor jobs
  • Incline mode for angled lines

Watch-outs

  • Red beam
  • Tripod or clamp sold separately
  • Stock was low when checked

4
Best for picture hanging

Bosch UniversalWallLevel 3-in-1 laser spirit level (0603663JZ0)

Best for: Picture walls and gallery frames, where you want a line at any angle

Beam
Line at any angle, or a point
Accuracy (maker)
±0.5mm/m
Range (maker)
Line up to 5m, point up to 20m
Mounting
Pins into the wall

This is a different kind of tool: a small spirit level with a built-in laser. You pin it to the wall, set it level (or at any angle) using the bubble vials, and it projects a single line along the wall for up to 5m, or a point for up to 20m to transfer a height across a room. Bosch quotes ±0.5mm per metre. It's not self-levelling, so you do the levelling yourself with the bubbles.

It's the cheapest Bosch option here and the one to choose for hanging a row of frames, wallpaper borders or a stair gallery at an angle. For kitchen units or tiling, a self-levelling cross line laser is quicker.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Line at any angle, great for stairs
  • Doubles as a spirit level
  • Light and cheap

Watch-outs

  • Not self-levelling
  • Single line, not a cross
  • Pins leave small holes

DeWalt DW088K-XJ self-levelling cross line red laser

Best for: Regular DIYers and renovators who want a tougher laser

Beam

Range (maker)

Mounting
Built-in magnetic pivot bracket

DeWalt's DW088K is a long-running favourite with tradespeople and serious DIYers. It self-levels up to 4° and flashes when it's out of level, has a two-button layout, and the overmoulded housing and thick glass are designed to survive knocks on site. The built-in magnetic pivot bracket sticks to metal studs, radiators and steel lintels, and it has a standard tripod thread.

It has thousands of Amazon.co.uk reviews, and owners praise the build quality, accuracy and time it saves. As with every red laser, some owners find the line hard to see in bright rooms. It's sold and shipped by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Tough, site-proof build
  • Magnetic bracket built in
  • Huge number of positive reviews

Watch-outs

  • Red beam in bright rooms
  • Bulkier than the Bosch Quigo
  • No tripod included

6
Best value with tripod

Huepar 30m green cross line laser level with 100cm tripod

Best for: Tiling, panelling and kitchen jobs where you need the laser at a set height

Beam
Green cross (110°)
Accuracy (maker)
±3mm at 10m
Range (maker)
Up to 30m
Mounting
100cm tripod included

Huepar is a specialist laser brand, and this kit includes an aluminium tripod that extends to about 100cm, which is handy for tiling a bathroom or fitting a dado rail. The green cross line covers 110° each way, Huepar quotes ±3mm at 10m and a range of up to 30m, and there's a manual mode that locks the pendulum so you can project angled lines. It's rated IP54 for dust and splashes and runs on two AA batteries (included).

Owners rate it highly for accuracy and brightness and say it worked well for tiling and general DIY. Huepar itself notes the tripod's bubble is decorative only, so level with the laser, not the tripod. It's sold by Huepar Direct and shipped by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Green beam and a tripod in one kit
  • Long quoted range
  • Manual mode for angled lines

Watch-outs

  • Tripod bubble is decorative
  • Less well-known brand than Bosch or DeWalt
  • Third-party seller (Amazon-fulfilled)

Cheapest

RockSeed LV1 red cross line laser level with carry pouch

Best for: One-off jobs like a single shelf or a row of frames

Beam
Red cross (110°)
Accuracy (maker)
±2.5mm (distance not stated)
Range (maker)
See listing
Mounting
1/4in tripod thread (bracket not included)

The RockSeed LV1 is one of the best-selling budget lasers on Amazon.co.uk. It self-levels within about 4°, flashes when it's out of range and has a manual mode for angled lines. It comes with a canvas pouch and two AA batteries, and RockSeed rates it IP54. The magnetic bracket shown in some photos isn't included.

Owners say it's easy to use and far quicker than a spirit level for home jobs, and good value. The weak points are what you'd expect at the price: the red line becomes hard to see beyond a few metres, and a few owners had trouble with self-levelling. It's sold by RockSeed and shipped by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Very low price
  • Self-levelling plus manual mode
  • Popular and well reviewed

Watch-outs

  • Red line fades beyond a few metres
  • Accuracy figure is vague
  • Bracket not included

Green beams look roughly four times brighter to the human eye than red ones at the same power, which is why they stay visible in daylight and over longer distances. Red lasers cost less and their batteries last longer. For a north-facing bedroom in the evening, red is fine. For a sunny kitchen extension, buy green.

Makers quote accuracy as millimetres per metre (mm/m). ±0.5mm/m means the line could be up to 2mm high or low at 4m from the laser, which you won't notice on a shelf. For long runs of tiles or kitchen wall units, a tighter figure matters more. Some budget makers quote a single figure like “±2.5mm” without a distance, which makes it hard to compare.

  • Self-levelling lasers have a pendulum that settles the line level as long as the laser is within about 4° of level. Most flash or beep when they're too far out.
  • Manual or lock mode locks the pendulum so you can tilt the line, for example along a staircase.
  • Plumb points project a dot straight up and down, for transferring a mark from floor to ceiling.

Most DIY laser levels are Class 2 lasers. The UK Health Security Agency says these are safe for short, accidental exposures, because we naturally look away from bright light, but can be hazardous if you deliberately stare into the beam, and they can dazzle. Check the class on the label, never stare into the beam, point it at people or pets, or let children play with it. Keep the laser below or above eye level when you can, and switch it off when you move it.

FAQs

Is a laser level worth it for DIY?

If you hang more than the odd picture, yes. A cross line laser lets you line up shelves, frames, splashbacks and tiles without pencil marks or a long spirit level, and it frees both hands. For a single shelf, a good spirit level is still fine.

Is a green laser level better than red?

Green beams are much easier to see, especially in bright rooms and over longer distances. Red lasers are cheaper and use less battery. Choose green for sunny rooms and bigger spaces, red for small rooms and evening jobs.

Do laser levels work outside?

Not well in daylight. The line is usually invisible on a sunny wall a few metres away. Outdoor and trade lasers use a detector (receiver) to pick up the beam. The DIY models here are designed mainly for indoor use.

Can I use a laser level to find studs or cables?

No. A laser level only projects a straight line. To check for timber studs, cables and pipes before drilling, use a detector from our stud finders guide.

Have you tested these lasers?

No. This is a research-based roundup using the makers' specs and patterns in Amazon.co.uk owner feedback. See How we research.

Do you get commission?

Yes. If you buy through the links on this page, Amazon may pay a small commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn't affect which products are included. See the affiliate disclosure.
