How we chose: I compared popular 18V impact drivers on Amazon.co.uk, checking each listing on 28 October 2026 (with a UK delivery postcode) for an add-to-basket button, the seller, the model number and whether a battery is included. Torque, speed and weight are the makers' figures from the listings. I read recurring themes in Amazon.co.uk owner feedback, and left out US-import listings that may not suit UK batteries and chargers. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.

An impact driver looks like a stubby drill, but inside it has a hammer mechanism that adds thousands of rotational “hits” a minute when a screw gets tight. That lets it sink a 100mm decking or fence screw that would stall a normal drill driver, with much less twist in your wrist. It uses a 1/4in hex quick-release collet instead of a chuck, so you'll need hex-shank impact bits.

It's a second tool for most homes, not a first one. A combi drill drills holes in wood, metal and brick and drives screws; an impact driver mostly drives screws and bolts. If you only buy one, buy a cordless combi drill. Add an impact driver when you start building decking, sheds, raised beds, stud walls or lots of flat-pack.

Who this guide is for: DIYers who already own a drill and are taking on bigger screw jobs: decking, fencing, garden buildings, stud walls and loft boarding. If your jobs are mostly flat-pack and small screws, a light electric screwdriver is easier. Before you drive long screws into walls, check for cables and pipes with a stud finder or cable detector.

The picks in detail

1
Best overall

DeWalt DCF887N XR 18V brushless three-speed impact driver (body only)

Best for: Regular DIYers who want a proven, compact brushless driver

Torque (maker)
205Nm
Battery platform
DeWalt 18V XR
In the box
Tool only
Weight
About 1.2kg (body)

The DCF887 is one of the most popular impact drivers in the UK. It has a brushless motor, three speed and torque settings (handy for starting small screws gently on speed 1), 205Nm of torque and a weight of about 1.24kg according to the listing. There's an LED light and a belt hook. This listing is the bare tool, so you'll need a DeWalt 18V XR battery and charger.

Owners call it powerful, reliable and light, and say the three speeds make it versatile, from cabinet hinges to long coach screws. One quirk: some of the listing's technical details mention other DeWalt models, so check the title says DCF887N before you buy. It's sold and shipped by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Three speeds for control
  • Compact and light
  • Brushless motor
  • Very well reviewed

Watch-outs

  • Battery and charger not included
  • DeWalt batteries are pricier than Einhell's
  • Listing details mix models

Best for control

Bosch Professional GDR 18V-215 cordless impact driver (body only)

Best for: Bosch Professional 18V owners who want auto-stop modes for wood and metal

Torque (maker)
215Nm
Battery platform
Bosch Professional 18V
In the box
Tool only
Weight
About 1.0kg (body)

Bosch's GDR 18V-215 has 215Nm of torque and 3,300rpm, two speeds, and automatic modes for wood and metal that slow or stop the tool as a screw seats, so you're less likely to strip a head or sink a screw too far. The head is only 126mm long for tight spaces, and bits drop straight into the one-push collet. Note this uses Bosch's blue Professional 18V batteries, not the green Power for All range.

Owners describe it as a professional-level tool that's compact, light and easy to use, and a must-have for serious DIYers. It's the tool only, sold and shipped by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Auto modes reduce stripped screws
  • Short head for tight spaces
  • Light at about 1kg

Watch-outs

  • Battery and charger extra
  • Blue Professional batteries, not green Bosch DIY ones

Best value brushless

Einhell Professional 220Nm 18V brushless cordless impact driver (body only, 4510085)

Best for: Einhell Power X-Change owners who want plenty of torque

Torque (maker)
220Nm
Battery platform
Einhell Power X-Change 18V
In the box
Tool only
Weight
About 1.2kg (body)

Einhell's Professional range sits above its standard DIY tools. This driver has a brushless motor, 220Nm of torque, variable speed and a 1/4in hex chuck, and it takes any Einhell Power X-Change battery, which also runs hundreds of Einhell garden and power tools. It's body only.

If you already have an Einhell drill or hedge trimmer, this is the cheapest way to add a strong, brushless impact driver. It's sold and shipped by Amazon. It has fewer reviews than the DeWalt and Makita, so there's less owner feedback to go on.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Highest quoted torque here
  • Brushless motor
  • Huge Power X-Change battery range

Watch-outs

  • Body only
  • Fewer reviews than the big names

Best starter kit

Einhell Power X-Change 18V cordless drill and TE-CI 18/1 impact driver set with 2 batteries (4257214)

140Nm (impact driver)
Battery platform
Einhell Power X-Change 18V
In the box

This kit pairs a cordless drill (13mm quick-change chuck) with Einhell's TE-CI 18/1 impact driver, plus two 2.0Ah batteries and a charger. That gives you a drill for holes and a driver for long screws without swapping bits, which makes jobs like decking and shelving much quicker. The impact driver's 140Nm is lower than the bare tools above, but plenty for most home projects.

Owners say the set is reliable and robust, with good battery life and fast charging, and one says it puts a 3in screw through wood easily. It's sold and shipped by Amazon.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Two tools, two batteries and a charger
  • Good value as a starter kit
  • Batteries fit Einhell garden tools too

Watch-outs

  • Lower torque than the bare tools
  • Brushed motors
  • Bulky case

Torque (maker)
165Nm

The DTD152 is a long-running, compact Makita impact driver with 165Nm of torque, two speeds and a variable-speed trigger, on Makita's huge 18V LXT battery range. This listing includes a Makita carry case but no battery or charger. It's a brushed motor, so it's a little less efficient than the brushless tools above.

The DTD152 has a strong reputation with tradespeople for reliability. Note this listing is sold and shipped by Elsons Online rather than Amazon, and has fewer reviews than the plain tool listings.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Compact and well proven
  • Makita LXT battery range
  • Case included

Watch-outs

  • Lower torque than the newer brushless tools
  • Body only
  • Third-party seller

Ryobi's R18ID2 delivers up to 200Nm and 3,200 impacts a minute, with a variable-speed trigger, a cast aluminium gear housing and a MagTray magnetic holder for screws and bits. It takes any Ryobi ONE+ 18V battery, one of the biggest DIY ranges in the UK. Although the listing title calls it an impact wrench, it has a 1/4in hex collet, so it's an impact driver.

Owners say it performs well, has strong torque and is great value. It's sold by a third-party seller (Wonderman Tools) and shipped by Amazon. Some of the listing's technical details show a US model number, so check you're getting the UK R18ID2-0.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Good torque for the price
  • Huge ONE+ battery range
  • MagTray holds screws

Watch-outs

  • Body only
  • Third-party seller
  • Listing details are muddled

The same impact driver as in the Einhell kit above, sold on its own. It has 140Nm of torque, electronic speed control for delicate work, three LEDs, an aluminium housing with soft-grip surfaces and a belt clip. It's the cheapest way into an impact driver if you already own an Einhell battery.

Owners call it a superb, powerful tool for the money, with more than enough torque to bury screws. When I checked, Amazon showed only a handful in stock from a third-party seller, so it may sell out before Black Friday.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Lowest price here
  • Shares batteries with Einhell garden tools
  • Compact

A combi drill drills wood, metal and (on hammer mode) brick, and drives screws. An impact driver has a 1/4in hex collet and adds rotational impacts for driving long screws and bolts, but it isn't designed for drilling big holes or masonry. An impact wrench has a 1/2in or 3/8in square drive for sockets and wheel nuts. For DIY, a combi drill first, then an impact driver, covers almost everything.

Use impact-rated bits, usually black or marked “impact”. Ordinary screwdriver bits can snap under the hammering. A magnetic bit holder and a few 50mm PZ2 and PH2 bits will cover most UK screws. Hex-shank drill bits work for small holes in wood.

Most impact drivers here are sold as the bare tool. They only work with batteries from the same brand and range: DeWalt XR, Bosch Professional (blue), Makita LXT, Ryobi ONE+ or Einhell Power X-Change. Bosch's green DIY tools use a different range (Power for All), so a blue Bosch Professional tool won't take a green battery. If you have no batteries, buy a kit like the Einhell set.

Impact drivers are loud when the hammer kicks in, so ear defenders are worth wearing for long jobs. Wear eye protection, keep your other hand clear of the screw line, and check for hidden cables and pipes before driving screws into walls.

FAQs

Do I need an impact driver if I have a drill?

Not for most homes. A good combi drill handles shelves, flat-pack and most screws. An impact driver makes long screws (decking, fencing, sheds, stud walls) much quicker and easier on your wrist, so it's worth adding if you do those jobs.

Can an impact driver drill holes?

Small holes in wood and metal, yes, with hex-shank bits. It isn't designed for large holes or masonry. Use a combi drill on hammer mode for brick and block.

What torque do I need?

For home DIY, 140–220Nm is plenty. The extra torque matters most for long coach screws and bolts. Speed settings matter more for small screws, so you don't strip the heads.

Will a Bosch Professional impact driver take my green Bosch battery?

No. Bosch Professional (blue) tools use Bosch Professional 18V batteries. Green Bosch DIY tools use the Power for All system. Check the battery range before you buy.

Have you tested these impact drivers?

No. This is a research-based roundup using the makers' specs and patterns in Amazon.co.uk owner feedback. See How we research.

Do you get commission?

Yes. If you buy through the links on this page, Amazon may pay a small commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn't affect which products are included. See the affiliate disclosure.
