How we chose: I shortlisted freestanding fridge freezers across budget, mid-range and premium price levels, from 55cm-wide models for small kitchens to 91cm American-style side-by-sides. For each one I checked the manufacturer's UK product page or energy data sheet for the fridge and freezer capacity, energy class, yearly electricity use, noise level, frost-free system and dimensions. On 24 October 2026 I reopened every Amazon.co.uk listing with a UK delivery postcode to check it was the same model, in stock, with an add-to-basket button, and noted who sells it. I don't show prices, because they change daily. Running costs use the Ofgem price cap for October to December 2026. I haven't tested these fridge freezers myself. These products have not been tested hands-on; this is a research-based roundup. How the research works.
A fridge freezer runs all day, every day, so its running cost matters more than for almost any other appliance. The energy label shows the electricity used a year in kWh. Across the eight models below it ranges from 204kWh to 290kWh, which at today's price cap is about £54 to £76 a year.
Size is the other big decision. Standard fridge freezers are 55cm or 60cm wide and about 1.8m tall, three-door and multi-door models are wider, and American-style side-by-sides are about 90cm wide. Check the fridge and freezer litres separately, because the 50/50 or 70/30 label doesn't tell you how much space each part has.
Buying in the sales? Our Black Friday appliance deals page lists fridge freezers, washing machines and dishwashers worth watching, and our best washing machines guide compares running costs the same way.
Who this guide is for: Anyone replacing a fridge freezer, moving home or upgrading to a bigger or frost-free model. These are freestanding models, not integrated ones. Measure the width, height and depth of your space, plus the doorways on the way in, before you choose.
Black Friday tip: Fridge freezers are heavily discounted around Black Friday, but prices on many models move all year. Match the full model code, check the price history and compare the delivery and removal options before you buy. Our Black Friday appliance deals page explains how.

- Energy
- D, 204kWh a year, 35dB
- Running cost a year*

- Frost free?
- Yes (Total No Frost)
The cheapest fridge freezer to run on our list. Samsung's product information sheet lists class D and 204kWh a year, with a 35dB noise level (class B), and 344 litres split 230L fridge and 114L freezer. SpaceMax uses thinner walls to fit more inside a standard 59.5cm-wide body, Total No Frost stops ice building up, and AI Energy Mode with the SmartThings app can cut energy use further, which Samsung puts at up to 10%. It's sold by Amazon.
D sounds worse than it is: many fridge freezers sold today are E or F, and this one uses less electricity than every other model here.
What owners and reviewers like
- Lowest running cost here
- Quiet 35dB
- More space in a standard 60cm size
Watch-outs
- App features need a Samsung account
- Pricier than budget 60cm models

One thing to check: the Amazon listing title says F rated, but Hisense's UK page lists class E. Check the energy label image on the listing before you buy. The running cost here uses Hisense's 243kWh figure.
What owners and reviewers like
- Non-plumbed water dispenser

Many 55cm fridge freezers are manual or low-frost. Bosch's data sheet lists this one with NoFrost, 255 litres (171L fridge, 84L freezer), class E, 229kWh a year and 41dB, in a 182.4 × 55 × 55.7cm body. It's sold by Amazon, which showed very limited stock when I checked.
41dB is the loudest figure here, though still quiet for a fridge freezer. The freezer is small, so it suits one or two people best.

Hoover H-FRIDGE 300 HOCT3L517EWK-1 55cm 50/50 fridge freezer, white
Best for: The lowest cost to buy, with a bigger freezer for the size
- Type & size
- 55cm combi, 176cm tall
- Capacity (fridge / freezer)
- 252L (151L / 101L)
- Energy
- E, 218kWh a year, 39dB

It's Low Frost, not frost free: ice builds up more slowly than in a basic freezer, but you'll still need to defrost it now and then. In return it has the biggest freezer of the 55cm models here and is cheap to run for its size.
What owners and reviewers like
- Low cost to buy
- Bigger freezer than the Bosch
- 10-year parts warranty (Hoover)

- Energy
- D, 254kWh a year, 37dB
- Running cost a year*
- about £67
- Frost free?
- Yes (Total No Frost)
Hisense UK lists 541 litres (344L fridge, 197L freezer), class D, 254kWh a year and 37dB, in a 91.1 × 178.6 × 61.5cm body. That's the same running cost as the LG 60cm combi above for well over half as much space again. It has a flat-door design with recessed handles, Total No Frost, an inverter compressor and a 3-litre water dispenser you fill by hand. It's sold by Amazon.
At 61.5cm deep it's relatively shallow for an American-style fridge freezer, but measure your doorways: it's 91cm wide.
What owners and reviewers like
- Huge capacity
- Class D, low running cost for the size
- No plumbing needed for water
Watch-outs
- Needs a 91cm-wide space
- Side-by-side freezer is narrow

- Four-door American, 83.3cm wide
- Capacity (fridge / freezer)
- 467L (311L / 156L)
- Energy
- E, 290kWh a year, 35dB
- Running cost a year*
- about £76
- Frost free?
- Yes (Total No Frost)
Haier's Cube layout has French doors on top and two freezer doors below, in an 83.3cm-wide body that fits where a 91cm side-by-side won't. Haier lists 467 litres (311L fridge, 156L freezer), Total No Frost, class E, 290kWh a year and 35dB, with an inverter compressor and an external touch display. It's sold by Amazon, which showed limited stock when I checked.
It's the most expensive to run of the eight, but the freezer drawers are wider and easier to organise than the tall, narrow freezer of a side-by-side.
What owners and reviewers like
- Fits an 83cm space
- Quiet 35dB
- Wide freezer compartments
Watch-outs

The energy label shows the electricity used a year in kWh. Multiply by your unit rate for the yearly cost. At the Ofgem price cap of 26.32p per kWh (October to December 2026, Direct Debit average):
- Samsung RB34C600DSA (204kWh): about £54 a year.
- Hoover HOCT3L517EWK-1 (218kWh): about £57 a year.
- Hisense RS3P558NMID American-style (254kWh): about £67 a year.
- Haier HCR3818ENMG (290kWh): about £76 a year.
*Real use depends on your kitchen temperature, how often you open the doors and how full it is. Ofgem announces the January to March 2027 cap in late November, and I'll update these figures then. An older fridge freezer can use far more than any of these, so it's worth checking the label on yours.
The split describes roughly how the door height is shared between fridge and freezer, not the litres. The Hoover sold as 50/50 has 151L of fridge and 101L of freezer, and the Hisense sold as 60/40 is closer to 68/32 by volume. Always compare the fridge and freezer litres on the maker's data sheet.
- 50/50: more freezer, good if you batch cook or buy frozen food in bulk.
- 60/40 or 70/30: more fridge, good if you buy fresh food often.
- Standard 55cm or 60cm: fits most UK kitchens and is cheapest to buy. 55cm models suit small kitchens but have small freezers.
- Three-door or multi-door: freezer drawers are easier to organise, often with a flexible zone. They're usually deeper.
- American side-by-side: the most space, often with a water dispenser, but you need a 90cm-wide gap and the freezer is tall and narrow.
Plumbed water and ice dispensers need a water supply behind the fridge. The two Hisense models here use a tank you fill by hand instead.
Frost-free (also called No Frost or Total No Frost) models circulate cold air so ice doesn't build up and you never need to defrost. Low Frost models, like the Hoover here, slow ice build-up but still need defrosting occasionally. Frost free costs a little more to buy but saves a messy job.
Check the width, height and depth, and leave the ventilation gap the manual asks for. Measure every door and hallway on the way in, especially for American-style models. Delivery, installation and removal of your old fridge freezer vary by seller and postcode, so check the options on the listing before you order.

FAQs
What's the best fridge freezer in the UK?
For most homes with a 60cm space, the Samsung Series 6 RB34C600DSA: 344 litres, frost free, quiet, and the lowest running cost of the eight here at about £54 a year at the current price cap.
How much does a fridge freezer cost to run a year?
At the October to December 2026 price cap of 26.32p per kWh, the models here cost about £54 to £76 a year, based on the yearly kWh on their energy labels.
Does a bigger fridge freezer cost more to run?
Usually, but not always. The Hisense American-style model holds 541 litres and costs about £67 a year, the same as the 333-litre LG combi, because it has a better energy class.
What does 50/50 or 70/30 mean?
Roughly how the door height is split between fridge and freezer. It isn't the split in litres, so check the fridge and freezer capacities separately.
Are frost-free fridge freezers worth it?
For most people, yes. You never need to defrost the freezer. Low Frost models are cheaper but still need defrosting now and then.
Have you tested these fridge freezers?
No. This guide is based on manufacturers' UK specifications and energy data, retailer listings and independent advice. I don't own or test the products. See how we research.
Do you get commission?
Yes. If you buy through links on this page, Amazon may pay me a small commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn't affect which fridge freezers are included. See the affiliate disclosure.
