Most of us cook with a mismatched collection of pans: one good frying pan, a couple of tired saucepans with flaking coating and a lid that fits nothing. A matching set is usually cheaper than buying pieces one by one, and it's a popular Christmas gift and Black Friday buy. Switching to an induction hob also forces a lot of households to replace their pans.

The big decision is the cooking surface: non-stick (easy, but it wears out), stainless steel (lasts for decades, but has a learning curve) or ceramic non-stick (free of PTFE, but it can lose its slickness faster). Then check induction compatibility, which pieces you actually use, and the guarantee. Our picks run from a budget non-stick set to a buy-for-life stainless set, plus one cast-iron piece that's worth adding.

Tefal, which bills itself as the inventor of the non-stick pan, makes this five-piece set. It covers what most households use every day: three lidded saucepans and two frying pans (22cm and a big 28cm). The non-stick coating is reinforced with titanium particles for durability, and Tefal's Thermo-Signal spot turns solid red when the pan is hot enough to start cooking, which helps stop you overheating the coating. It works on gas, electric, ceramic, halogen and induction.

Owners like how easily food slides off and how quickly it cleans, and they say it works well on induction. As with any non-stick, longevity depends on how you treat it. A few owners report the outer coating marking or peeling. Tefal recommends plastic or wooden utensils, so keep metal spatulas away.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Sensible piece mix including a 28cm frying pan
  • Thermo-Signal heat indicator
  • Works on all hobs including induction
  • Easy to clean

Watch-outs

  • Non-stick will eventually wear
  • Plastic or wooden utensils only
  • Some reports of exterior coating marking

Best space-saving set

Tefal Ingenio Emotion Stainless Steel 10-Piece Set with Removable Handles

Stainless steel; titanium non-stick on coated pans

5 years (pans); 10 years (handle)

Ingenio's detachable handle is the clever bit. Click it off and the pans nest inside each other, which Tefal says saves up to 50% of the space, and they can go from the hob into the oven, onto the table and into the fridge with a lid on. Tefal guarantees the three-point handle for ten years and says it carries up to 10kg. The pans have a five-year guarantee, extra-thick bases for even heating on all hobs including induction, and Thermo-Signal on the non-stick pieces.

Owners love the space saving and say the set is good quality for the money and works well on induction. A few report marks or corrosion on the stainless steel over time, so dry the pans after washing. If you have lots of cupboard space and prefer fixed handles, the Titanium set above is simpler.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Stacks to save cupboard space
  • Oven, table and fridge friendly
  • Long handle and pan guarantees
  • Induction compatible

Watch-outs

  • Detachable handle takes getting used to
  • Some reports of marking on stainless
  • Only two handles for the whole set

Stainless steel doesn't wear out the way non-stick does, and a good set from ZWILLING, the German cookware brand, can last for decades. The Passion set is 18/10 stainless with ZWILLING's Sigma Classic+ sandwich base, an aluminium core that spreads heat evenly and holds it. It has internal measuring scales, a drip-free pouring rim, solid stainless handles and tight-fitting lids. It's dishwasher safe and works on every hob, including induction.

Note that it's a saucepan set, with three saucepans (2L, 3.5L and 6L), a 3L casserole and a 1.5L milk pan, but no frying pan. Pair it with a separate non-stick frying pan. Owners call it the best set they've owned and praise the weight and build. The main complaint is that the metal handles get hot, so keep a cloth or oven glove handy.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Built to last: no coating to wear out
  • Even heat from aluminium-core base
  • Measuring scales and pouring rims
  • Dishwasher and induction safe

Watch-outs

  • No frying pan included
  • Stainless handles get hot
  • Food sticks if you don't preheat properly

Best PTFE-free ceramic set

Cuisinart Ceramica XT 11-Piece Non-Stick Cookware Set

Best for: Big households wanting a complete ceramic non-stick set without PTFE

Pieces

If you'd rather avoid PTFE-based coatings, ceramic non-stick is the main alternative. Cuisinart's Ceramica XT surface is titanium-reinforced and listed as free from PTFE, PFOA and PFAS. This 11-piece set is genuinely complete: two lidded saucepans, a lidded sauté pan, a big 5.7L stockpot, 20cm and 24cm frying pans and a steamer insert. It has aluminium cores for even heating, and the listing says it's induction compatible, dishwasher safe and covered by a lifetime guarantee.

BBC Good Food gave the Ceramica XT set five stars in its 2026 pan-set testing, naming it the best set if you don't use induction. The listing says it works on induction, but if that's your hob, check recent owner reviews on induction performance. Owners like the professional look and easy cleaning, but say the surfaces scratch over time and the non-stick doesn't stay as slick as new forever. That's typical of ceramic coatings.

What owners and reviewers like

  • PTFE- and PFAS-free ceramic coating
  • Very complete 11-piece set with stockpot and steamer
  • Independent 5-star review (BBC Good Food)
  • Lifetime guarantee per listing

Watch-outs

  • Ceramic non-stick loses slickness with use
  • Surfaces can scratch
  • BBC Good Food rated it for non-induction hobs

Good Housekeeping rates the Tower Cerastone set its best-value pan set for all hob types, and it's one of the best-selling sets on Amazon UK. You get three lidded saucepans and 20cm and 28cm frying pans in forged aluminium, which heats up fast. Tower says its multi-layer Cerastone coating is five times stronger than standard non-stick and free from PFAS, lead and cadmium. The soft-touch handles stay cool, and the guarantee runs to five years if you register the set online.

Owners say it's solid for the money, heats evenly and cleans easily. Opinions on durability are mixed: some sets still look new after years, while others report coating wear on the larger frying pan. A few owners found that not every piece worked on their induction hob, so test each pan when it arrives and register the guarantee.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Strong value with an independent award (Good Housekeeping)
  • Good piece mix including a 28cm frying pan
  • Cool-touch handles
  • 5-year guarantee with registration

Watch-outs

Want stainless steel without the ZWILLING price? Russell Hobbs' Classic set gives you a milk pan, three saucepans with vented glass lids and a 24cm non-stick frying pan. It works on gas, electric, solid plate, halogen and induction hobs, it's dishwasher safe and it has a five-year guarantee. Owners like the shiny finish, the light weight and how well it works on induction.

Russell Hobbs warns that the metal handles heat up quickly, and owners agree, so you'll need an oven glove. There are also some reports of rust spots. Dry the pans promptly and avoid leaving them to soak. It was sold by a third-party seller rather than Amazon when we checked, so check the seller's returns policy.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Low price for stainless steel
  • Induction and dishwasher safe
  • Vented glass lids
  • 5-year guarantee

Watch-outs

  • Metal handles get hot
  • Some rust-spot reports

Best cast-iron add-on

Check Le Creuset's terms

Not a set, but if you're buying pans for a keen cook this Christmas, a Le Creuset casserole is the classic upgrade. The Signature shallow casserole is enamelled cast iron, made in France, and works on every hob including induction, as well as in the oven and under the grill. Cast iron heats slowly and evenly and holds its heat, which makes it ideal for curries, casseroles, braises and even bread. The enamel interior releases food easily and doesn't need seasoning like bare cast iron.

Owners say it cooks beautifully and expect it to last a lifetime. The main complaint is the price. It's heavy too, at over 4kg empty, and the listing gives a few different capacity figures (2L in the title, more in the description), so check the size details on the page. This link is the Caribbean (teal) colour, and other colours are separate listings.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Superb heat retention for slow cooking
  • Hob to oven to table
  • Enamel needs no seasoning
  • Made in France; famously long-lasting

Watch-outs

  • Expensive
  • Heavy (4kg+)
  • Listing capacity details are inconsistent

Non-stick, stainless steel, ceramic or cast iron?

Two scallops searing in a stainless steel frying pan on a hob
Stainless steel sears beautifully once it's properly preheated; non-stick is easier for eggs and fish. Photo: Arthur Swiffen / Pexels
Non-stick (PTFE) pans are the easiest to cook with and clean, and they're ideal for eggs, fish and pancakes. The coating wears, though, and most need replacing after a few years of daily use. Stainless steel lasts for decades and can go in the dishwasher and oven, but food sticks unless you preheat the pan and use a little fat. Ceramic non-stick is free of PTFE and works like non-stick at first, but it generally loses its slickness sooner. Cast iron is unbeatable for slow cooking and searing, but it's heavy.

Many cooks mix them: a stainless or ceramic saucepan set, plus one or two non-stick frying pans that you replace when they wear.

Check induction compatibility

Induction hobs need magnetic pans. All of our picks are listed as induction compatible, but owners of some budget sets report that individual pieces don't register. The quick test is to hold a fridge magnet to the base. If it sticks firmly across the base, the pan should work. Bases that are smaller than the hob ring heat less efficiently, so check base diameters, not just rim sizes.

Which pieces do you really need?

Most households use a small saucepan (16cm) for sauces and veg, a medium one (18–20cm) for pasta and rice, a large frying pan (24–28cm) and something bigger for batch cooking, such as a 24cm saucepan, a sauté pan or a stockpot. Big 'piece counts' often include lids, utensils and steamers, so count the actual pans. Couples and small kitchens may be better served by a compact or stackable set like the Ingenio.

Making non-stick last

Use low to medium heat, because high heat is what wears coatings fastest. Use wooden or silicone utensils unless the maker says metal is fine. Don't heat an empty non-stick pan on full power. Even if a pan is dishwasher safe, hand washing usually extends the coating's life. Tefal's Thermo-Signal spot is handy here: once it turns solid red the pan is hot enough, so there's no need to go hotter.

What 'PFOA-free' and 'PFAS-free' mean

PFOA was a chemical once used in making non-stick coatings, and it's no longer used, so 'PFOA-free' is standard on new pans. Conventional non-stick coatings are made from PTFE, which is itself a type of PFAS chemical. Pans labelled 'PFAS-free' or 'PTFE-free' are usually ceramic, enamelled or uncoated metal. If you'd rather avoid PTFE, choose stainless steel, cast iron or a ceramic set like the Cuisinart. Always check the maker's own wording, because labelling isn't consistent.

FAQs

What's the best pan set for an induction hob?

Any set with a magnetic stainless or bonded base. Stainless steel sets like the ZWILLING Passion and Tefal Ingenio Emotion are reliable choices, and non-stick sets like the Tefal Titanium are listed for induction too. Use the fridge-magnet test if in doubt.

How long do non-stick pans last?

It depends on use and care, but expect a few years of daily cooking before the coating wears noticeably. Low heat, soft utensils and hand washing help. Stainless steel and cast iron can last decades.

Are non-stick pans safe?

Modern non-stick pans used as directed are considered safe for home cooking. The main risk comes from overheating an empty pan on high heat, which can damage the coating and release fumes. If you'd rather avoid PTFE altogether, choose stainless steel, cast iron or ceramic.

Is Le Creuset worth the money?

For slow cooking and as a long-term investment, many cooks think so: enamelled cast iron lasts for decades with care. If you only make the occasional casserole, a cheaper enamelled cast-iron dish will do a similar job.

Can pans go in the dishwasher?

Stainless steel sets usually can. Many non-stick sets say they're dishwasher safe, but hand washing helps the coating last longer. Check each listing, as some sets (and wooden or Bakelite handles) are hand-wash only.
